What do you think about Burt's Bees?

I'm fairly new to "natural living" with regard to beauty and personal products and have been trying out various Burt's Bees products which claim to be anywhere from 95-100% natural. I was reading in another thread about how some companies can sort of play on the truth a bit so I was just curious how you all feel about this particular company. TIA!

I think that Burt's Bees was just bought out by a larger company, but the ingredients haven't changed. I really like and trust that company, personally.

Here's a great website (from EWG) for you that has evaluated all products, including Burt's Bees....

http://www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep/...=Burt%27s+Bees

Be prepared to be frustrated because just about every single product has something "wrong" with it. But the natural products tend to rate lower at least. One of the categories, "unstudied ingredients" doesn't worry me because I think it just means the FDA hasn't studied it (including natural remedies/herbs/etc.). I think that the message they are giving is that we shouldn't overdo our use of anything. Everything in moderation...

I personally love many of Burt's Bees products (especially the lipbalm) but they are very expensive so I don't buy much of it.

nak

it's always seemed to me like an overpriced status-symbol "look at me i'm *natural*" thing ... but then i am super cheap n make a lot of stuff like that myself or do without. other than that it seems to be fairly honest as a cosmetic company goes n if you want to spend your money on that kind of thing, go for it.

one thing i always wonder ... from where do they pull the idea that tomato, say, is good for your skin, or carrot or parsley for such & such "skin type"? and how much of the active property of those ingredients is actually in there once they get done blending, saponifying, pasteurizing, etc ... wouldn't it work just as well to go out n get your own tomato/carrot/parsley?

anyway, in regards to some of the more generalized claims that cosmetic companies make about skin care, i highly recommend "blue eyeshadow should absolutely be illegal" and "don't go to the cosmetic counter without me" by paula begoun (sp?). covers things like the fine-line lies, the toner lie & the different-types-of-skin ploy.

:LOL Good point girlndocs.

Off topic: Okay, I have been a part of MDC for how many years now and I STILL haven't been able to figure out what "nak" means. I finally am asking (and feeling like an idiot).....?

(Actually I would have never thought of that)

Thanks Linnea

I don't use it because I'm vegan and although I'm not a NO BEE PRODUCTS EVER kind of person, I see no reason to use them if animal product-free versions are available.

I like the products a lot. Also, the customer service is great. I wanted to try a product, but didn't want to buy a whole one until I did. I emailed them & they sent a free sample right out.

if you REALLY want to get natural I would recommend making your own products

or buying Aubreys Organics , Or Erbaviva, or Earth Mama Angel Baby

They should all have websites too!

Erbaviva soap free wash bags are heaven, by the way!

The Erbaviva stuff looks great! I have a question, why does it seem like the nicer the product or more 'natrual' the product the more it costs? I would love to try some of this stuff, but my gosh I was blown away by the prices! I guess I'll just stick with my No spill shampoo bar!

because the ingredients used in the truly natural products cost more and they are not being purchased at such insanely large quantities.

Look online at a soap supply store to compare the difference in price between mineral oil vs avocado oil. You'll quickly see why one is used in mass production while the other isn't
