It is so unreal.

We should have a fat foot contest.... I'm normally a size 8 1/2 shoe... I'm wearing size 9 mens sandals with the velcro extended as far as it goes.... rockin'

I just keep thinking of cute cute cute baby and how sweet she will be and how this will alllllll be worth it.

kimberly-I had the fat foot problem late in my pregnancy with DS#1. This time, at the end of a long hot day I will get it, too.

I remember last pregnancy I got my first pedicure ever and the woman doing it seemed literally SHOCKED to see my big FEET!

I could only wear my Birkenstocks during my last pregnancy-big-feet-time.

Hang in there. My swelling didn't go down immediately after giving birth, either. Drank moderate amounts of caffeine and that helped.

oh, yes, birkies are ALL i'm wearing these days!

i've been pretty lucky so far, but there have been several days of "oh my goodness, is that thing really part of my body?!"

oddly, it's usually my left leg/foot... maybe the right one gets a little puffy, but i really balloon on the left one. again, yay for birkies, cuz you can adjust 'em!

and it's all better once you have the baby!

Don't even get me started on how much I LOVE Birkenstocks. Pregnant or not!

You know I found whenI upped my protein, like an egg each morning the swelling wasn't as bad

I'm scared of my Birkies.
My podiatrist said that wearing them allows the bones of your feet to spread too much. And when things are already loose in pregnancy, that means even more foot spreading. EEK! I keep looking at them wistfully, then taking a step back.

Daednu,

Wow, I'd never heard that.

My swelling is unreal at night now.... course my bp was 160/90 last night. This sucks.

BTW, some swelling might be helped by adding protein, but when you have a true medical condition like pre-eclampsia there's nothing that's going to make it go away. You can sometimes stall it, but there is *nothing* that can prevent pre-e. Dr. Brewer's diet is highly controversial.

I am following it but in a modified version.

If it were as simple as following a specific diet, we wouldn't have the pre-e rates we do in our world.

Sorry, soapbox time.

Swelling for me, is not just swelling... it's like a little glimmer of what awaits me. I know, because I've been there before... I've done the whole 25 lb weight gain in 1 week... the edema in my breasts so bad the lactation consultant couldn't find my nipple... etc....

Sorry, I'm in a sourpuss mood today.... and really frustrated with a few people in my life who seem to think that I *choose* to be pre-eclamptic? As if anyone would choose this junk. As if I would turn down a way I could prevent it? I've done everything in the book, every supplement, herb, etc.... I walked 10-15 miles/week until it gave me sooooooo many ctx the doctor made me stop..... for some reason, my body just revolts when it is pregnant.

Daednu-Never heard that about the Birkies. But then again I've never been to a podiatrist, either.

Kimberly- This pregnancy stuff is hard w/out any medical/health concerns-let alone having pre-E and other stuff. I completely understand being a sourpuss about the whole thing. It's hard to watch your body change, and not in the wonderful "glowing" way that we're made to believe happens with all women. Hope things are at least a little better for you this time around.

The worst thing is that I'd always worn my Birkies thinking I was being such a good girl being good to my feet. Ha!

I think that for some things like pre-e the few people who get there because of bad choices make a bad name for everyone else. For instance I have a friend who in her first pregnancy ate horribly and got no excersise. She started petite and gained way too much weight and ended up with mild pre-e. The second time around she took care of herself simply by eating healthily and walking sometimes and had no problems. Well people look at cases like that and instead of thinking oh that momma made some bad choices the first time around they think see, it can be prevented by diet and excersis so everyone with pre-e much have a lousy diet and get no excersise. It so frustrationg how people can't seem to look beyound their own view based on limited experiences.

Anyway, I hope it goes well for you and I hope and pray you can cook that babe for a little longer! Keep us informed

Kimberly,
I am so sorry about the pre-e. What does your doctor say? How far along are you? I have heard that taking a bath in epsom salts can help because of the Magnesium. Of course nothing other than delivery will cure the pre-e, but maybe you can stave it off until the baby reaches viability. You are in my prayers. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.

oh, i doubt he meant it! how could a birkenstock force your foot to spread any more than, say, walking barefoot? it can't! now, if you wear birkies exclusively, you won't be able to smoosh your foot into the stupidly narrow shoes that pass for modern day footwear... because your foot naturally "spread" to what it's supposed to be.

i've visited several podiatrists, and for each of the things i had problems with, birkies were recommended to help fix 'em! (notably, bone spurs and morton's neuroma).

i've never heard of a foot doc shooting down birkies... maybe you have a foot that reacts badly to them? but in general i find it hard to believe a podiatrist would issue a blanket statement against these... i mean, what else would he (COULD he) recommend in leiu of 'em?

(can you tell i have maybe a bit of a soft spot for my shoes, hmm?)

No, he wasn't kidding.
He didn't make a blanket statement against them. He said they're well made shoes. The only problem with them is the wide footbed allows/encourages the foot to spread to a wider foot base. It's like doing yoga to stretch your body out...the Birkies do that for your feet.
I know a woman who owns a shoe shop and she can ALWAYS spot the people who have worn Birkies for a long time. Their feet are very wide and they have a heck of a time finding anything else that fits them properly anymore.
