Wow I didn't know that either. No more Olive Garden for me. Between the bf'ing thing and this - OG is not a place I want to give business to anymore. Geez, I hate it when this happens - stupid manager personal at a place I like go and do stupid things like this and then I have to give up my right to eat those yummy deep fried raviolis.... :

got a response to my letter

Here is the response that I received this morning. It is a nice reply, but I am still boycotting because of the anti-gay hiring practices mentioned above. Maybe I will send an email back to Ann about that.

Dear V:

At Olive Garden we strive to make sure that everyone is welcomed like
friends and family. "When You're Here, You're Family," is not just a
phrase in our commercials -- it defines how we want to take care of all
of our guests. This includes any guest who chooses to breastfeed their
child while dining in our restaurant. In fact, if there is anything we
can do to make someone more comfortable while nursing her child we will
do so.

We are proud of our reputation as a restaurant where families come to
gather and share a meal. Olive Garden has never had a policy or
position that either limits or prohibits a mother from breastfeeding her
child.

Please let us know if you personally know of someone who has been made
to feel unwelcome while nursing in one of our restaurants. We would
investigate such an incident immediately and thoroughly and most
importantly, contact that guest to offer our assurances of a delightful dining
experience.

Also, we wholeheartedly appreciate your compliments about our food
quality. We will do everything possible to continue to earn your trust and
goodwill.

Has anyone confirmed the gay hiring issue is accurate?

Victorian, I got the EXACT same email this morning.

ETA, I just looked at mine again, it wasn't the exact same email...mine came from someone named Darlene, not Ann, lol.

same email from me- any confirmation of the gay hiring policy? Sadly that is quite common.

I too got the same email. Sad. If everyone is family we should all be getting personal attention not some generic email.

just wanted to let you guys know how it went in case there's been no update.. basically, there were more than 20 of us who showed up -- mostly moms and kids, one dad.. and then there was the reporter and the photographer. we were outside for a while making sure everyone was there. the photographer took photos of us by the olive garden sign and the reporter asked everyone questions. it took forever for them to seat us and even once we were seated, it took forever just to get a glass of water. that sucked (think texas heat!! ugh..). then, they brought adult drinks first and kids drinks second.. what's that about??

anyway, i had letters prepared for the manager (who we'd already seen wandering around looking a little nervous) and gave them to our waitress to give to him. i told her i wanted to speak with him. when he came to the table, i voiced my concerns. he interrupted nearly everything i said and in the end, passed the buck on the whole situation. he said that he had spoken with corporate after receiving my original letter and was told that they would handle it. he said that in his restaurant, bfing was always "allowed" and that bfing moms are always welcome. all in all, it was pretty much what i expected. we ate our meal and nursed our babies/children.

i had mentioned to him that if i were the manager, i'd make sure that corporate actually did something. i also told him that for every person who showed up, there were at least 2 more who were boycotting. i told him that if we didn't get some sort of response, we'd all be boycotting and that we'd tell everyone we knew to boycott as well. later, he came back with the number to the guy in media relations. a couple days after the nurse-in, i spoke with him and he apologized for how guest relations had handled the situation. he assured me that there is a bf policy, although when i asked to see it in writing, he said he'd get back to me. we'll see what happens. the bad news is that the reporter wouldn't run the article since we couldn't locate the mom who was originally asked to leave the location in kentucky. its sad because the issue, at this point, is so much bigger than that. ah well.. we did what was in our hearts and for now, i'm boycotting the olive garden. until i see, in writing, a bf policy from them, i won't be eating there. thanks to all of you for your input.. it was truly valuable to me!!

Thanks so much for the update! We all had been wondering. Please keep us posted if there are any new developments. I'm going to start spreading the not so good word about the Olive Garden now.

Wow, I'm really impressed with how well you handled yourself, mari. I can never confront people in person like that. I'm such a coward. I just hide behind my desk and write letters and send them out. Bravo to you! Great job!

Too bad the reporter didn't think the nurse-in was worth writing about.

The whole nurse-in was based on something that they can't prove ever happened. That doesn't leave the reporter with a choice. He obviously thought it was worth writing about if he showed up in the first place.

In my opinion, the demonstration is news-worthy in itself. I don't think it should be essential to produce the person who inspired the demonstration. It isn't just a single incident that's the issue. It's their policy.

thanks.. i have no problem with confrontation. and when something inspires me, i can't let it go until i see it through. unfortunately, it seems as though i've done what i can do for the moment. hopefully, it was enough to get them thinking and maybe get acting. the reporter.. he felt it was worth writing about and honestly, he wanted to do the story, but couldn't. without confirmation from the woman who was originally asked to leave, he couldn't print the story. if i'd known that's what he was going to need, i would've hunted her down. at this point, i'm taking it as a sign that it wasn't meant to be. even if i were to find her, its been too long to print it now unless there was some new development. that's the way these things work out sometimes. i set out to do what i felt was right in my heart.... and accomplished it. to me, that's what matters.

i agree. its about so much more than that woman, but when the media is involved, everything has to be substantiated. its too bad really, because he could've just said something like.. "it was rumored that a woman in KY was asked to leave her local olive garden for nursing her baby. when a dallas mom heard about this, she immediately wrote an email to the olive garden to try to get to the bottom of things...." etc. and go on with the story from there. no biggie!! if nothing else, we made a difference with the manager of the restaurant, the staff, the reporter and photographer and all of us involved. i'm proud that i got to be there that day.
