I have a question, maybe that would get things rolling. I'm in need of a good devotional right now. Any recommendations? I didn't have enough money to buy one yesterday at B&N, but would like to get one soon. I saw one I really liked (can't remember title now ) but it was hardback and something like $20 for a 30 day devotional.

I don't use devotionals anymore, sorry. I am open to them, mind you. Its just been so long since I've used a devotional.

How about doing your own, in a sense.

YOu could write down a bunch of verses that you like or would like to know more about and each day take a verse, pray, look it up in a concordance, lexicon, or commentary, meditate and journal about it.

That would be free.

Devotionals

I had been looking for one, too. Sometimes they have them at church (not at ours) just on a table and there is a little basket you can donate some money in there beside the devotionals. I went to Family Christian Bookstore and found one that is a softback, so not as expensive, but still I thought it was kind of pricey...but got it so hubby and I could do it together, then will pass it on to my ds#1 if he wants it. It technically geared towards teens anyway, but I liked it better than some of the others I looked at there. It's called the Oneighty Devotional by Blaine Bartel and was $12.99. I liked Hotmamacita's idea of taking some verses and using them. So far, though, things have been so busy here and we have not taken the time to do this yet. I am still trying to read through my Bible! Tried several times to just start at the beginning and follow on through, but that was just overwhelming for me. So...I have broken it down. First I read through Psalms, then Proverbs. Next onto the four Gospels. I'm on Luke right now. Have already read through Revelation before. So...after I get through John, I am not sure where I will go next. Have read Genesis several times and part of Exodus...then I get overwhelmed. We'll see. Maybe Job. I use my NIV Bible for studying, but still love the King James version. I like the King James for memory verses. Oh, since I am new here, I have been kind of wandering around looking at lots of sites, and still so many to see, do most people just finally find some places they like and settle there or do you get lots of wandering? I am having trouble remembering where I have posted. LOL! Well, take care! Bye. tinybutterfly

There you go again, totally avoiding the subject at hand. I know its DeNiro, Ms. Fancy Pants.

And who is this 'Christian' RED SOX that you alluded to? Isn't that like an oxymoron? :

Hi all.

Did anyone watch Colonial House? I ask because they talked about something there that this talk of published devotionals put me in mind of. The man who was the appointed governor of the colony was seperated from his family for a month or more when there was an emergency. (His son and his daughters fiance back home in TX were in a bad car wreck. Son was injured and the fiance was killed.) Outside of "Colonial House" this man is a Southern Baptist minister. During the seperation, which had little opportunity for communication (occasional letters that took a very long time) they decided to keep in touch spiritually by reading the same Psalms on the same days and praying on them. The narrator for the show said that during the actual colonial times there was a governor who did that with his family for something like two years! I just found that very moving.

That is, Kama. What is Colonial House, btw? Is that a show?

Welcome, btw.

hotmami... It was a brief run show on PBS... 8 episodes, I think.. they took a few dozen people and put them in the same kind of circumstances the early colonials faced and filmed them. They had to clear land, plant corn, cook over open fire, wear the clothes, etc... it was very interesting.

Oh ye of little faith [article from 2002]:

Quote:
Teamwork and respect for others is also an integral part of [Trot] Nixon's life. He credits his mom as the person who invested time in taking him to church as a child. It was a woman in his mom's Bible study that actually introduced him to Christ as his personal Savior back in 1993...Nixon says he was trying to lead a Christian life but still found himself floundering until he and his wife Kathryn began attending Bible studies with Athletes in Action Boston pro director, Walt Day. Nixon is now mentored by Day and Mike Stanley, a former teammate in 1998-99 and a Boston coach who serves as a father figure and spiritual guide on the team. Stanley gave Nixon an NIV Study Bible that he uses daily.

As the 2002 Red Sox season continues, should Nixon go into a slump or begin to develop a bad attitude, he has his spiritual support team in place..."hold me accountable-calling me to take some quiet time and pray," he says.

Prayer has become a vital part of Nixon's daily life. As a leader in the clubhouse and a fan favorite, Nixon takes seriously his responsibilities as a positive role model in the Boston area and beyond. Nowhere does he feel that responsibility more than at home. Helping with baths and diapers, Nixon is an active dad. His wife says [baby, born on 9/11/01] Chase and Trot are great playmates and he certainly counts those fun times with his son as treasured moments. Yet he feels strongly the need to model a Christian way of life in his family. "It would be a blessing to someday introduce Chase to the truth of Jesus Christ," he says.
and in his own words:

Quote:
Life sure is challenging at times. We often think we have all the answers but many times we are only fooling ourselves. I grew up going to church and had a great Christian influence in my home.

It wasn’t until 1993, just prior to starting my professional baseball career, that I understood being a Christian was more than going to church and coming from a Christian family. Being a Christian meant that I understood there was nothing I could do to earn God’s favor and a place in heaven; it meant I needed to trust in what Jesus Christ did for me on the cross. Jesus died for my sins and rose again so that I could have eternal life.

That decision of putting my faith in Christ has given me the assurance of spending eternity in heaven with Jesus. It has also given me confidence in knowing that God provides me with guidance in every circumstance if I will call on Him in prayer, just talking with Him like you talk with a friend.

Over the past few years, I’ve also been able to grow by reading God’s Word— the Bible. Life isn’t perfect. I don’t always drive in the winning run, but I have a greater purpose in life— to bring glory to God, and live with the assurance that I will spend eternity with Jesus in heaven.

My favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 40:31— “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

What position does he play? Oh, I'll go look it up.

I am encouraged by his story and his words of Faith. He sounds genuine and I appreciate that in people of Faith.

Thanks DaryLLL.

Oh, I am sure that playing for the RS has increased his prayer life tremendously. : : : :

Hey, I just looked up some yankee players on that site. Pretty interesting. I never knew so many claimed to be Believers.

I'm a little confused. Is this thread about Christianity or baseball? By the way, Hotmamacita, when I lived in Boston I saw cars with Yankees stickers and their windows bashed in. I guess its a good thing that you live thousands of miles away.

BACK ON TOPIC..........

My two devotional suggestions (besides just studying the Bible) are The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis and The Practice of the Presense of God by Brother Lawrence--both classics.

But baseball is SOOOO spiritual. At least to DH and I think to DaryLLL as well. That is probably another reason why DH and DaryLLL are kindred spirits....

For mother's day, dh took me and all four kids, with custom Yankees hats to the Mariners/Yankees game here in Seattle. It was a trip. DH was a bit worried that we might not be received well but oh, my...Seattle sport fans are polite and wear loafers and drink lattes at the games.....

It is not a devotional in the familiar sense but I LOVE Dietrich Bonhoeffer's COST OF DISCIPLESHIP.

So HERE'S where you guys have been hiding out! Thank goodness I found you again. Been thinking about this "tribe" a lot in the last couple of weeks. I remember you guys talking about "A Purpose Driven Life" awhile back and it sounded interesting, but I didn't actively pursue getting it. Well, I took my car to get fixed and while in the waiting room, I picked up a magazine, and it happened to be a Christian magazine (confession--I picked up the magazine because it had Mel Gibson on the front cover!). On the first page there was an ad for "A Purpose Driven Life". Then I realized that the music that was playing over the speakers in the waiting room was christian music (which also made me think about MDC and the convos I've seen around about how the US really does "wear christianity on its sleeve". Made me think, but that's another thread entirely). Then I looked up and noticed that a guy sitting right on the other side of the waiting room was reading "A Purpose Driven Life"! How bizarre is that? I bought the book that afternoon and hope to read it when my family goes on vacation next week.

And speaking of vacation and prayers, please pray that my 2-yr-old doesn't torture the other people on the plane as we make a cross country flight!

Thanks for the ideas for devotionals. I should have enough points soon to get a GC for Amazon.com so I'll be spending it wisely.
