A little dissapointed at my appointment.

Well, we arrived at the doc office and I started to nurse. He would'nt latch because he was very hungry, but with the help of the doc he finally did. He kept falling asleep and I kept switching sides. After 20 min I figured he was going to do all he could so we weighed him and NOTHING. He had'nt eaten a thing. I was so dissapointed. We figure that what I'm pumping is really what I'm producing. She's happy we took him off the bottle because she agreed that he would'nt nurse if he was taking a bottle. She's happy I'm getting more and more milk and she up'd my Domperidone script to the max dose, 4 tablets 4 times/day. I am feeling fuller so I know that his nursing is really helping my supply. I just really thought he was getting more. It does explain why he gets so fussy after nursing for 10 min, why he's falling asleep while nursing and why he's still drinking lots of formula after a nursing session. So, knowing this I am going to catch him before he's to hungry and let him nurse on each side for 5 min and then suppliment, this way he won't get so frustrated. As my supply comes in I will nurse a little longer.

I'm not giving up, it's just a little hard on the ego. I'm very proud of my little man. He's trying so hard and I'm not going to give up on him. I just have to keep at it. I know that he is getting something because he has milk in his mouth after he nurses. I can do this. I will be able to ebf him. I know I can do this. It is working and my supply is getting better and better every day.

Had he gained any weight? Because I'm sure he's getting some, maybe just not that time. I hope it improves!

I will send good nursing thoughts your way big hugs for you!

Aw, mama! You are doing such a great job. As was mentioned, maybe he just didn't get anything that time. You guys will get it. It's just going to take a little bit. Don't be too hard on yourself.

How much are you producing a day, now?

I'm only getting maby enough to cover the bottom of the collection cup. However, when I hand express I can actually get more than that. I am starting to "stream" when I pump instead of just having drops fall. I just thought maybe he was getting some because he's started to latch so well and I can hear and see him swallow. Oh well, I'll just keep plugging away.

Just b/c he had a bad session at the doc doesn't mean he'll have bad sessions all the time. It's a journey to get to full time breastfeeding in your situation and you're doing great!! (My ds is almost at the breast full time- he was 5 1/2 weeks early, is 5 weeks old tomorrow and has been getting supplemented bm since about day 3.)

Try not to be discouraged. It sounds like that wasn't a typical nursing session for you guys so it makes sense that he wouldn't have gotten much. Did you feel letdown like you normally do? Could tell he was drawing and swallowing? It sounds like things are still improving every day. Keep up the good work.

s to you CJR

Perhaps you both were a bit on edge with being in the Doctor's office. I know that when I would pump I hardly got anything, so I never did pump. Keep that in mind that pumping is not indicitive of how much breastmilk you are producing.

Keep offering that breast! You are doing so well, call if you need anything!

Maybe you were just stressed out by being at the doctors office. Do you notice any change in the baby's bowel movements? Can you tried compression? I used that at the breast AND when I was pumping. Pumping I would get 2x as much with compression!

Have you tried massaging your breast towards the end of the pumping session? Doing this and breast compressions can really help to empty your breast better, especially when you have the pump helping out.

He probably is getting something, sometimes. Even if he isn't, he is helping your supply increase.

Finally, I would start looking at your daily totals, rather than at your per/pump amount. This will give you a better picture of what you are actually producing.

You're doing great!

Great tip! I just tried it with this last pump session and even my lazy left side put out twice as much as usual. I will do this at every pump and nursing session.

Thank you so much. He's not doing so well today. I don't think he's feeling well. He's been sleeping most of the day and he is very cranky. Only wants to nurse to help him go to sleep (he stayed attached to me for an hour this morning while he slept), other than that he screams bloody murder if I go near him. I gave him some oval and that seemed to really help. I have pumped 1/2oz worth of bm today in only 3 sessions! That's really good, I'm hoping to get an oz an a half to mix in his night time sip cup. Thanks again for the tip.
