DD still hurts 1 month after DPT

Just some background:
DD's father and I are separated. I am against vaxing, he believes that for anything to be established in the mainstream it must be correct... if there was anything wrong with it, it would have been rejected, right?
Anyway, we decided on this compromise 3 years ago: she would not be vaxed, at all, until her 1st b'day, and then they would be given individually and spread out over the next 5 years. No well-baby visits, and no vaxing for obsolete illnesses.
That said.
My dd's practice recently switched to the new DPT+HepB+Polio. Since, in our part of the world, I see no point in HepB at her age, and no point in Polio whatsoever, this was the first time she received either of these. I was so F 'ing angry that they tossed 2 more dreadful diseases into this poison cocktail... I wanted to cry. AND my ex was giving me trouble for not allowing them to add a new ELECTIVE meningitis shot to the mix. Grrrr...
ANYWAY, enough ranting, here's the problem:
my DD STILL has a lump at the injection site, and it has been a month!!!
I called her office and was told that the lump is normal, as long as it isn't red. I told the woman it is red, and she told me a nurse would call me back. The nurse called and told me this was normal, as long as it wasn't tender/ sensitive to the touch. I told her it WAS tender and she told me a doctor would call me back. The Dr. called me back... I was sure he was gonna tell me everything short of elephants flying out of her nose was normal. And if I had said, "Well, Dr, there are elephants flying out of her nose!" the surgeon general would have called me back 10 minutes later to tell me this, too was normal, as long as they weren't Asian elephants... anyway, that was 2 weeks ago. the lump is diminishing but is STILL tender and now looks greyish-blue under the skin.
Now, I am told that the lump is associated with DPT, but DD has had DPT before. In fact, this was her last dose, and before this, no reactions aside from lethargy and grumpiness.
I am starting to worry... anyone know anything about this?

I just want to say real quickly that just because she had the vaccine before doesn't mean it didn't affect her adversely this time. Many children can take a certain vax the first time and the next time it is too much for the body and they react to it.

So sorry you are in that situation and that you couldn't educate your ex before separating. But who knows what he would have done afterwards anyway. Does he truly love his daughter? Does he want the best for her? If yes, you might still be able to deal with him.

My grandfather the Natural Health guru sent us several books while I was pregnant... DDs father wasn't interested in reading so much as a passage, so I tried paraphrasing. It just ticked him off... his response is that if it was bad, it wouldn't be legal. I laughed out loud, thinking of all the terrible things that have been legal, often mandated, throughout history.
I'm sure he thinks I'm the one not putting love of my daughter first... as if I enjoy being belligerent and questioning institutions, so much so that I would happily jeopordize her health. Blah.
Anyhoo, I just know that if I take her back in to look at her arm, they're going to tell me again that it's fine. It's about the size of an apricot pit and a very unpleasant color.

The other one dried up unless you subscrib. Sorry! I will remove it from my post.

Hurry up and read this one before it dries up, too. I think they keep them only for so long.

anecdotal bit

Just thought I'd toss in my personal experience here. As a child I had similar reaction to the DPT (though I reacted the first time it was given) With subsequent doses the ped. first reduced the DPT dose and did half a DPT dose, I had an increased reaction (swelling AND fever AND couldn't move the limb without pain for a week...) Then of course they were sure that it was the P that I was reacting to, so next I just got the DT - again an increase in reaction. Continue several times over until I just got a half dose (or less) of the tetnus and continued to have increasing reactions. They finally gave up and agreed that I was allergic to it. They even warned against ever getting it again outside a hospital setting because the reactions were increasing (as often happens.) SO, if you have to do this vac again, document carefully.

Hope your dd is feeling better soon!

From the Business Week article-
Quote:
Back in the 1980s, companies bailed out of vaccines because prices--and profits--were low, and because they faced huge legal threats from people harmed by vaccines. Congress largely solved the liability issue with a 1986 bill setting up a program to compensate victims. "That led to increased research, and we are seeing the fruits of that now,"
HOLY CRAP!

mealymama, I am so sorry you are going through this. I wish I had more useful information to give. I would see a naturopath.
