Student Mamas...New thread!! - Page 2

Luckily, my rank was high enough to keep my scholarship

But it bumms me out a little -law school is such a competitive environment that I have pushed myself more than I like to admit.

For me the biggest adjustment to mothering has been letting other things go to raise dd the way I want. I have to admit that I thought about how easy it would be to prop her with a bottle in front of a Disney movie so I could just get this last case read.

But of course I would never do that :Puke

Thanks for the support!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh, I am FINISHED my thesis! Wooo HOOOOOOOOO! I just finished writing the last chapter. I can't believe I managed to do this with an 8 month old baby!

I guess I'm not really finished though...I still have to edit, and do some revisions, and then defend. But in my mind, right now, I'M DONE!!!

Must go find chocolate.

Another student mama here.

I'm a single mama, one 3.5-year-old son.

I'm going into my third year of law school (also in a 4-year program). I've worked for the past two summers and part-time during the year for a professor doing research mostly on civil procedure, some on comparative law and public health law.

It's very exciting to finally be on the downward slope to graduation and with any luck this coming year will be much less stressful than the pit of hell I was writhing in last semester. :LOL

Congratulations to everyone who's just been accepted! Amie, rock on with your grades! Don't beat yourself up, whatever you do. Remember that especially in law school, B's are actually good grades. It's hard being a mama and working and being in school - having 3 different focuses, all of which you're supposed to be giving 100%.

Nice to see you all!

Another student mom here. I'm officially starting the elementary education block this fall, so 3 semesters of classes, one semester of student teaching, then back in the work force I go. (Unless I decide to continue to get my masters.....)

I returned to school last fall (2003) and got a 4.0 last fall and would have pulled it off for spring, but ds decided to be born 5 1/2 weeks early, 2 days before my last final. I was given an incomplete and was able to take the final when ds was 2 or 3 weeks old, but I didn't have the time to study and it was pretty far out from my classes. Not to mention, he was born via c-section (the others were born vag), so I was recovering from that. I only managed a C for that last class. I'm a little bummed about it, but have decided to cut myself some slack- I did just have a baby and major surgery, right?

Classes start here 8/23 and we have a mandatory 'get to know you' thing on 8/21, not sure if I'll bring the baby or leave him w/dh. (I'll probably leave him, got to get used to it, I suppose).

I'm taking summer classes. I'm a 3rd year psych student and am just getting some reqs out of the way with these summer cram courses. I got an A in astronomy and I'm just about done with 1st year spanish. ?Si dolfines son mas inteligente, por que son viven en iglus?

My babies are 2.5 yrs and 7 weeks. In the fall I'll be taking some upper division psych classes but only online, so I can stay home. Right now dh stays home with them.

Med school

Hi,

Great to see so many students around! I am also in medical school. I took a year off to have DD right in the middle of my second year. I go back in January, the day after DD's first birthday. It's going to be hard.

Heidi-I know what you mean about rotations. I'm worried they won't give me time to pump, and I will miss nursing her all day long!

Any other PhD students out there? I finished my MA and thesis a few months before having ds and I also finished my course work for the PhD, except one class that I brought ds to. Now I am doing field work for a year and then I'll write my dissertation. So, I have about 2 years left to finish my PhD (it's in cultural anthropology).

my ds is 2 months old. i'm taking a year off of grad school (u.s. history) but i have no desire to return. i am thinking of starting law school next year instead. ds would be 15 months old. I just don't know if i should do this or not. will it be too stressful? will i miss my baby too much? any advice or insight is appreciated.

also it seems like the law students on here are taking the 4 year path. is it worth the extra cost? do you think it's necessary?

i really want to become a lawyer but i just don't know if i can leave my baby in daycare and juggle it all...

Well, I start school Aug 23. My financial aid is all lined up, and I even qualified for a childcare subsidy that pays 75% of the cost! Which means I'll only have to pay $37.50/wk! Yay! Child care isn't going to cost me more than tuition after all!!!

I'm majoring in Anthropology and I'm a junior, I'm starting slow w/ 14 hrs, I have to take at least 12 to qualify for my GI Bill (and w/ DH out of work again that's what'll probably be paying our rent.) and I have 2 4 hr classes. It's all lower level stuff thanks to a change in majors (from biology) and different requirements between ASU and WTAMU where I was going before I had DD.

I'm spitting mad about the cost of book, though. My anthro books I can get thru my mom, who works at the WT bookstore. She can special order used books and only has to pay cost plus 10%. But for my lower level Spanish class the books are going to cost over a hundred bucks and it's a custom package printed just for ASU!!! What's more I have to buy it new because they just updated it for fall. : It's a scam!

My Spanish teacher has a 9-month-old (whom she brought to class one day for the whole 3 hours ) and is into AP! One person in the class has had homebirths, and another is a Mothering reader! Oh yeah, and another one wants to be a doula. I really lucked out - for once I'm not a freak!

For the final, we had to have a conversation with the teacher and another student in Spanish, and the other student started asking us about our kids and asked if they were really expensive to raise, "because of all the formula and diapers" and the teacher said no, I breastfeed and use cloth diapers. It was really neat, and all in Spanish.

Hi Megan! Not a PhD student yet, but considering it. I'm just finishing up my master's thesis right now, and then I'll be considering schools to apply to for my PhD. How has it been, doing the PhD with a babe? We're hoping to have another baby next year, and that's a real concern for me...that I won't be able to manage two kids and doctoral work, or that I won't be as good a momma as I know I can be.

PhD student here. In the thick of things as usual..... got a new experiment starting now so that's pretty exciting. And a paper that I really, really should be working on....... not so exciting. I guess I just find technical writing really difficult sometimes, but

Anywho, nice to see so many clever mamas out there.
