Sew your own mama pads- know how?

I am wanting to switch to non-disposable AF supplies, and thought I would try making my own pad rather than buying them. Has anyone done this? what material did you use? how did you create the pattern? any thoughts and instructions would be appreciated. (then we can move to the instructions board.) thanks!

I just make mine from hemp and windpro scraps leftover from diaper making. I make them without wings (which I think are too bulky). You have to remember they're there when you use the bathroom so they don't fall in the toilet, but they're much easier to make than messing around with wings and pockets. I do one layer lt wt windpro with 2 or 3 layers of hemp. They are 2 inches wide and then 7, 9 or 11 inches long depending on whether they're for nighttime, regular, or pantyliners. I cut them square and then round the corners when I serge.

pagenta- how do you keep them in place? just by wearing them? is that what you mean by being careful that they don't fall into the toilet?

also...I was thinking about recycling some old t-shirts and using many layers of cotton to make them and then with maybe one layer of windpro on top. do you think that would work?

thanks for the pattern... that gives me a good idea.

They stay in place just fine unless you're pulling your underwear down in which case you just have to be sure you grab them in case they try to jump off.

The Windpro goes on bottom as the waterproof layer - it breathes (unlike PUL) and I've never had a leak.

I made some and I love them. I am wearing one now. I used some super buttery leftover flannel from some PJs (it has Chinese takeout on it). I did make wings with snaps on mine. I used a layer of flannel, a layer of unbleached cotton batting, a layer of terricloth (old towel) and then more batting and then the flannel again.

I actually sold some under the name Moxipads. A few of my online friends tested them and liked them. Its hard to have my sewing stuff out with a 2 yo though or else I could make more.

They are soooo soft.

hey -- if you want to do this and are kinda hesitant without a pattern/directions to follow there are two patterns I know of -- one made by kristin of kristin's cloth
http://kristinsclothpads.com/cloth-pad-patterns.html

and the other I think kimi of new conceptions

I've never made either, btu I know with making diapers I was a total wimp without a pattern. Now that I've made some dipes with a pattern I've moved on to making w/out.

Back when I first started with cloth, I got pads that you fold into either fifths or sixth depending on the width you needed. When unfolded they have 3? layers in the middle and 2 at the front and back.

When I made my own replacements I put 3 layers in the front 3/4 and 2 in the back, and made most of them wide enough to be folded into fifths for use. I used some nice flannel. I got 2 pads across the width of the cloth, I forget how many per yard though.
