I *love* using. . . PINS!!! - Page 3

Well just like I committed to doing we used pinned prefolds all day today! Not a single fitted!

It was really fun! I was using Gerber pins at the beginning of the day but came across some Dritz by the middle of the day. The jelly roll fold with the extra folded down in the back ( Jelly Roll Fold ) is the only way I can get the legs tight and the whole thing trim so it doesn't look like the baby in the red prefold! Totally works, give that a try if you're still having problems.

It was such a fun prefold day! Nathan seemed so much more comfortable in the pins and looked adorable! I got to admire the prefolds more (without the silly snappi across the front) and he went coverless in prefolds all day long. Not one fell off of him or even came close unlike snappi'd coverless prefolds.. the front panel would always fall out one side and then the snappi itself would be against Nathan's skin (often leaving a mark) and the third leg would be in the danger zone no longer covered by a prefold!!

Pinned prefolds rule! I had a great day with this, thank you to everyone who posted here!

I was so inspired by this thread and the cool step by step pics that tonight ds is sleeping in a ipf with hemp doubler all ... PINNED!!! : It was so much easier than I thought. I poked my scalp a few times though trying to slick up the pin. :LOL But, I'm loving pinning my dipes and want to buy more dritz pins ... can I get them at Joann's or similar places? Where do you find cute pins (albeit not as good quality as dritz but cuter for coverless).

I just went back to pins because the snappis have been kind of uncooperative lately. And.... I really really like them DH won't pin so I'm letting him have the snappis. DD wears prefolds at night and I'll keep a snappi on her so she can unhook one side and step out if she does get up to go potty in the night, but DS's alligator death roll is less deadly since I started pinning Great thread and awesome pictures, Moms!

Hey Daisymommy! I actually got my "cute" pins at Big Lots! Got them before ds was born....not sure where you'd find them these days. They are actually Crayola brand, and look like little crayons in red, yellow, green and blue. It musta been a promo, I guess.

I remember my mom had cute little ducky pins in pastel colors. She had Dritz, too.

Hmmmm....I wonder if one could decorate Dritz....like for a novelty/boutique type item?? Prolly not...the head isn't big enough, and any embellishments would prolly be considered a choking hazard.

Ah well....

Now, about the DDDDC......I really gotta know! Come on, 'fess up! I got :boypin :girlpin and I'm not afraid to use them!

Or are ya skeered??

I have bought Dritz pins at Hancock Fabrics. Unfortunately, there are no stores around where I'm living now; but, fortunately I found four more recently! I pins!

The main problem that I have with Snappis is the front of the diaper sort of bunches out at the top in the front. Maybe, if I folded it in the back instead of doing a newspaper fold it would do this less?

Cowards, I tell ya, Cowards!!

BethHG, IKWYM....I've never tried folding down the back though, so I don't know if it would help or not. I thought it was doing that because when I snappi, I put it sort of low, to try to keep it tighter around the thighs. (Loose at the thighs has always been my trouble with the snappi. DS has slender thighs, so that doesn't help the issue.) Anyway, placing the snappi lower in front helps some with the thigh thing, but makes the top of the dipe pucker more.

I don't know Beth; I've always folded the extra at the front because that's where DS needs it... haven't had the bunching thing; maybe it's a baby shape issue...

Oh and Nathan is in a pinned prefold right now, wouldn't you know it! It looks so darn comfortable! I pinched him with my long finger nails so I cut them tonight but other than that we've had no accidents! Tomorrow I'm going to try pinning in the side snapping fashion instead of front snapping if that makes any sense!

I'll be on the lookout for super cute pins! I have a few cheapo plastic ones with turtles on them.

hahahahaha!! : Okay, now that I know who's responsible, I'll admit you got me good! It's cracking me up....I'm posting extra today just so's I can see it!

So, how do you fold a prefold so it is side-fastening? I never thought about that.....Post pictures tomorrow if you get it to work, please!

I was just thinking that for those super escape artists, it might work really well to have them lie on their tummy for changes, and just put the PF on totally backward.....fastened (snappi or pins) in the back and all. In fact, that might work well to keep the snappi from shifting so much, or for grabbing delicate bits on boys.

Hmmm...I'll have to try that tomorrow, just for kicks. And, you MUST LMK if you come across any cute pins! Please please pretty please! I'm still trying to think of a way to safely embellish plain pins....Maybe the plastic headed ones would work better than Dritz.....I guess you could embellish them with paint at least--that would be cute (you could paint them to match your tie-dyed pfs!) and wouldn't come loose!

Hmmm....I may have to order some pins.....

What is DDDDC?

Re: cute pins - the ones I have are Gerber - little turtles. I did have some butt-ugly bear ones that I got from the dollar store, and I think my mom has some old duck ones lying around from my siblings' dipes. I get them at the grocery store, by the baby food.

Anyone using flats? I can get pretty good pin symmetry with flats, because I use oragami fold (check my sig - the link is somewhere in there), and fold the wings so they go all the way to the center. I pin the ends of the wings straight up & down, so the pins end up being parallel. I like how super-trim the flats are, too.

Ok - This is not my child but this is side pinning: http://www.darlingdiapers.com/cart/p.../picture_1.jpg http://www.darlingdiapers.com/cart/p.../picture_2.jpg http://www.darlingdiapers.com/cart/p.../picture_3.jpg

Amber of Darling Diapers showed me that one. It's tomorrows adventure!

Stell - I'm so afraid of flatfolds but curious too! I looked at your link and now I'm even more afraid! That oragami looks very difficult! I have some flats here but I'm afraid! :LOL I love the finished look though!

And a DDDDC stands for Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Basically someone pays mothering.com $2.50 to place a bold sentence under your username. They pick out what it says (no profanity) and it stays there for like a week to 10 days-ish. They are really fun!

Well, darn it, Mehndi Mama, now you've done it! Now I wanna try flats! In fact, I just went and cut a square from fabric leftover from a sling I made, and tried the origami fold....Jenn, don't be scared; it's really quite easy. Just read the pictures left-right, rather than top-bottom. I started with a piece about 8 inches sqaure and ended up with a tiny diaper about 2 inches tall! I pinned it with a regular safety pin (just one through both wings) and it is just darned cute if you ask me! Wish I could take a pic, but dh has the camera and is gone for the weekend.

Anyway, now I'm gonna have to find (or make) some flats. That's all there is to it! I remember my mom using flats with my younger sibs....I even remember learning to fold them (because I did my share of diapering, even as young as 7 or 8!), but darned if I remember how she taught us!

This is too cool.....I've always had a talent for origami--the paper kind--and this is even more fun! Anyone else have other flat folds?

Jenn, I think I need a step-by-step tutorial on that side fastening technique....it looks complicated! How the heck can you get it snug around the thighs??? Maybe ds will humour me tomorrow and let me experiment....

Well, I just Snappi'd ds diaper with folding in the back and using a jellyroll (which I didn't know existed until last night). It wasn't bunching up--yeah! I still prefer the pins though. But, on mornings when I am having a difficult time waking up and can't get my hands to work the way I want them too yet--the snappi is a wonder. Such as this morning, because I stayed up too late on this board!

NOah is a diaper houdini...

I snappi and I end up cleaning the floor. I pin and he walks out of the diaper (and it's on tight) : what am I doing wrong?? I like for him to go coverless and so I end up putting him in a fitted because I can't get him to stay in a prefold. It drives me nuts. Am I pin clueless? You think I jinxed myself by naming my store the way I did? I can't figure out pins or a snappi to save my life. Then again maybe it's diaper houdini? :

Does anyone think pins might work for knitted wool soakers. Knit a flat piece and then fold and pin. Any ideas? I don't have a little one, but knit soakers. What are the measurements of the prefolds you all use?
Thanks

Ok, this isn't a tutorial but this is Nathan in a side pinned prefold this morning: http://www.PictureTrail.com/gid4568851

The legs were super tight (I did it one more time this morning already and it was really tight again). I used the jelly roll fold technique for the fold itself but just switched the wing placement. The waist is still a little loose but I'm going to work on that and then do a tutorial if Nathan will work with me! :LOL

I'll also see if I can round up a flat or a flannel one layer blanket later!

And geez I can't imagine flat folding at 7 or 8.. here I am at 24 wondering if I can do it!

Beth - I'm glad you got that snappi to work! I don't plan to use mine much but they might be convenient on the run one day!

As for the Diaper Houdini - a lot of people find that front snapping fitteds wiggle right off their babies but side snapping fitteds don't. I'd try the side pinning and see if that works for you because it's the same principle.

Molly - Well it would have to be crocheted I'd think, yarn is soo loose in and of itself that I'd want to use something sturdy like a crocheted wrap.

*Oh and I read a tip - pin on the side that your worst at first and then pin on the good side because it's easier to cinch up the good side than to do that on the bad side. Then you don't end up re-pinning on side. *

Thanks Jenn I will try the side pinning and see if

that helps me any! What great tips and what a cutie Nathan is. Thank you!

OK, then ladies! So glad this post was generated b/c I woke up with pins and snappies on my mind. We can get gerber pins at our Walmart.....got a ton of them at DD's babyshower........ducks and turtles and regular old types. I HATE the gerber pins. They bend at the tip again and again, even tho I store them in a bar of soap.....mine just aren't up to the task of fastening toddler CPF's. I'm not even going thru all the layers of fabric. Drives me nuts. Hubby even has cut a bent tip off for me and re-sharpened the bugger.

Any of you tried both Dritz and gerber pins? I'd love to hear someone say that they have and that the Dritz are a better quality. (I'd get to place another diaper order then! ) I
do really like pins when they're good and sharp.........seems like you have more options for tailoring the diaper's fit and you don't have to worry about the snappi's nasty little teeth poking thru diaper layers and nawing on tender baby skin.

I have both Gerber and Dritz and definitely prefer the Dritz! The Dritz are longer and stronger. It's like they are steal and the others are more plasticy (I really can't explain that). I think the pin part is a tad thicker but all over they are very nice! Nathan has a toddler prefold on right now. Also I run the pin across my scalp instead of doing soap. When I did soap last time I tried pinning it didn't work well for me but running it across my scalp has been working wonderfully!
