Help ! I need some new books to read. I just finished The Poisonwood Bible (excellent), and am re-reading The Red Tent (awesome) and I am looking for suggestions for future reading. I prefer something which isn't brand new so I will actually have a chance of getting it from the library, although I like new books too ! Suggestions ?
TIA

Oceanmommy,
Check out "America the Beautiful" by Moon Unit Zappa - Frank Zappa's daughter! LOVED IT!

You are going to laugh! I think we have similar tastes. I have read both of the books you mention, and loved them. I am a voracious reader, and I read about 2 books per week. And the best, most spiritual, well-plotted books I have read lately are...

are you ready for this?

The Harry Potter books! I had read a lot of ciriticism on both sides and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. WOW! They are great fun, and I can't wait to have a 3+ year old to read them to!

I LOVE Harry Potter.

I would recomend The Ladies Auxiliary (sp?) I really liked it.

I also loved Stargirl. It is a kid's novel, but great just the same.

Claire Messud's The Last Life is very powerful! She has a wonderful gift for prose. This is also a book with a historical context (like Poisonwood Bible and Red Tent). It's not super new so you'll probably be able to find it.

I just finished reading the book Into the Forest by Jean Heglund. Very, very good book. Not sure if it is new, but if so it's definately worth the money spent.

Hey, onehipmama, I just looked up Stargirl on Amazon -- a Jerry Spinelli book! I love him! I really enjoyed Maniac Magee and Wringer -- there is a LOT of good literature for young adults these days. I'll have to look for Stargirl, it sounds really intriguing.

Oceanmommy if you followed the Clan of the Cave Bear series there is a new title available it's called The Sheltars of Stone and looks good. Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden was good, and Isabel Allende's Daughter of Fortune was also good.

The Outlander series is fun. They are historical novels with a time travel twist. Great read. The first one is called Outlander and I think there are 4 of them out.

Khrisday... I loved Sheltors of Stone and all of Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear novels ! They get a bit "romancy" at times, but I love the character of Ayla as a strong, intelligent, loving woman. I own them all and will never part with them.
Yes yes yes Nursing Mother I DO like historical novels, I will defientley check it out ( and Harry Potter, and others)
I love all the great suggestions on this thread so far...hope to see more too ...thank you one and all !

Has anybody read a book called "Walk in my Soul"? It as about a cherokee woman who falls in love with Sam Houston. It also discusses the trail of tears. I first read this about 15 years ago maybe.

If you like science fiction, I have some great books to recommend.

THE CELESTINE PROPHECY

I read this book when I was a teenager and I reread it every now and then. Actually I am reading it now!

It changed who I am, what I believe in. Its the only book that has done both!

I love the "Josephine B" books - 3 books based on Napolean Bonaparte's wife. The title is a little different - I can't remember the first two but the last one is "Last Dance on Earth". I didn't want them to end!

Well, my all-time favorite book is Ordinary People, by Judith Guest. For contemporary books, I loved Harry Potter(actually, my whole family does, even DH, who NEVER reads) and I'm a Star Wars fan, so I'm reading the new series of those books.

Maybe you'd like "Fall On Your Knees" by Ann-Marie MacDonald.

I'm with Ms. Mom. Or if you've got more time (more pages to it) go for "Atlas Shrugged," also by Ayn Rand.

amyrpk, I've read all her books - amazing! I love the way she looks at life - Atlas Shrugged was so deep - loved it.

I also love Albert Camus - a lot of songs by the Cure are based on his books.
