how to prepare a 2 1/2 year old for the death of a loved one?

My mil is in the last stages of cancer ... she lives 15 minutes from us and our ds loves her dearly. How do we prepare him for her death? She's not so ill now that it's obvious to him (it is to us) and I don't want to hasten any explanations before it's time, but I'm concerned for him.

I hope for our family that we ALL will be able to discuss and grieve her passing with her - but you never know...

thanks so much

I am really sorry to hear about your mil ((BIG HUG))). My 1st dh died and I did alot of reading for myself and also to my ds about death (my ds was 3 yo at the time). There are some great books out for children about death and grief. I love "Where is Grandpa", which is a book about a little boy and his family and dealing w/grief and where is grandpa now. Also, "When Dinosaurs Die" is another. I know your little one is so young, but they will grieve too.

We also talked alot about how some people get an illness and their body (not them) die. I never said that he is in a better place, etc., but that we can still talk w/him everyday and he is always with us.

Again, I'm so sorry that you are going through this tough time.

Much Love & Hugs~

Re: a similar situation I was once told that when someone leaves the world, they're finally always there when you need them.

There must be a way to word it for one so young, but I don't know it.
