OK I haven't sewn since 8th grade

Money is tight right now and I need some new baby stuff; plus I have several people I need to buy baby gifts for. I was at a craft fair today and there were these baby blankets. They were just a single layer of thin fleece (microfleece I think it's called) that was sewn around the edges. They wanted $30 for them and I thought "I could do that." So I haven't sewn in 20 years but it seems like that would just be doing straight edges to roll the hem over or serge it (my mom has a serger in the attic somewhere). Am I crazy? Is it that easy? Am I missing something? And where do you buy thin fleece or nice flannel for baby blankets?

I've seen those blankets before. They are cute. You know, you don't even need a sewing machine for fleece blankets. Fleece doesn't "unravel" or anything. You could just cut out a blanket the size you want and be done. If you want a more finished edge, you could cut strips around the edges of the blanket so it had fringe.

You can sew or serge the edge if you want also. Take a scrap piece and practice until you get it to look how you want.

You can buy fleece at Joann's or Hancock's fabrics (national chain stores). Both have a good selection. There are different kinds - polar, anti-pill, microfleece. Just feel them and see which you like better.

You could get two coordinating fleece fabrics, cut them to be the same size, cut strips in them so it is fringy, and them take two strips (one from each fabric) and tie them together. Do that for every "fringe" and then you have just made a double sided blanket that is tied together. These have been very popular recently.

Remember, you don't have to do anything to the edge if you don't want to. It won't fray or unravel.

HTH!

I've also seen the microfleece blankets edged with a blanket stitch in co-ordinating or contrasting embroidery floss -- they looked really nice, especially with the blanket corners slightly rounded.

So it does sound doable! Thanks!
