Sewing mamas...waterproof material ???

I'm trying to figure out if I can sew some postpartum pads. I thought I would ask the moms who sew dipes what they use for the cover or the outer part of an aio.

I need something creatively cheap. I can't afford to buy postpartum pads and I can't afford to order special materials, so what would I have around the house that would be waterproof, that I would cut up and sew to some old flannel to make a pad?

I could even get something at Jo-Ann fabrics with my 40% off coupon if it wasn't too expensive. I know they don't have PUL. I tired to explain that to the fabric person one day and she just looked at me and asked what I would use it for and then scratched her head and basically walked away....Lovely :

Help!!

You could use a waterproof ripstop nylon. If you're really paranoid you could use 2 layers.

With a mama pad, it's not like you're urinating hordes and gobs, you just need that waterproof as a backup, kwim?

You could also do a layer of 200wt fleece, but that sounds REALLY hot to me!

fleece would work, a waterproof mattress pad or "lap pad" Nylon... (just thinkin out loud here) Maybe try one of those?

Pardon my little knowledge...but would I just go to the fabric store and ask for "ripstop nylon"?

Thanks for the post!!!

You could get what is called 'rainwear' at JoAnn's - and, no, they are not particularly knowledgeable about high-end performance fabrics, unfortunately.

Rainwear is made generally from a nylon or rayon fabric, though, so you would have to wash on 'gentle'.

However, windpro/300/200 weight fleece are lovely alternatives - wool works as well, and you should have no problem finding at least some wool fabric for pad holders at a retail fabric store.

This will probably get moved to Sewing and Crafts soon anyway, but you can search in there for stores that carry PUL and other diapering materials. One online place that I keep window-shopping at is Wazoodle. The store gets rave reviews, and they have a fabric called ProCare--you can read about it and compare it to PUL here: http://www.wazoodle.com/cgi-bin/cats...rier%3BProCare --it's supposed to hold up better to laundering. Anyway, a yard is only $3.88. HTH!

I'm gonna refrain from posting anything about wazoodle because LeeAnne is really nice, but I do have some "scrap" pieces of procare. About 20 of them. They would be perfect for what you need. I went crazy and cut out about 20 pieces for diaper covers, but then decided that pattern wasn't gonna work.
PM me if interested. They're free.

I have *tons* of PUL pieces and other pad friendly fabrics that you can have for shipping. Just PM me if you want.

Waterproof Material

Hey, this doesn't have anything to do with pads; however, has anybody made their own wet bag. I know I can make it with waterproof material, but is there anything best to keep the smell in? Or does anybody know of any really cheap bags out there?

It only gets moved to sewing and crafts if it's started by a wahm, so I'm sure this thread is safe.

I just got some *camoflauge* waterproof material at Joanns. LOL
It was by the rip nylon, but I wanted something waterproof, so I did the old suck test (the lady at the counter was giving me strange looks on that one! ).
I think it was 3.50 a yard. Its working wonderfully for me so far.
I did have a camp bag from walmart, but it stayed waterproof for like the first time.
