i got my IUD at my 6 week appointment, just to make sure i didnt have another lil one too soon. my question is this, how long did it take for you to stop this non-sense bleeding? i mean every other week i am bleeding. my midwife says this is *normal* but i was curious to see if it was like this for others.

I got the copper IUD put in at my 6 weeks postpartum checkup and had maybe a spot or two of bleeding but nothing substantial. It certainly hurt getting it inserted.

When my periods returned at 6 months postpartum they were quite heavy, more cramping and lasted longer. I just had it removed a couple of months and my periods have better ever since.

I don't know if that will help you at all. I am not sure what the "typical" experience is with those and bleeding after insertion. It could also vary based on whether you have the copper one (Paraguard) or the hormonal one (Mirena).

I hope the bleeding stops soon!

I got the copper IUD in 97, it took a few days for me to stop the bleeding. My experience might be different than yours because this was immediately after Depo Provera (hiss) for me, so it took several years for my body to get back to normal.

Like the PP said, it also might depend on the type you have, copper or hormonal.

Good luck!

I've had mine since Nov '03(at my 6 week) and pretty much bled/spotted until my regular periods returned about 2/3 months ago. I've also got the copper IUD, from what I understand it is 'normal', but definitely annoying. My periods also returned super heavy, whereas they were light to moderate before. My midwife said that the bleeding is not abnormal taking into account the IUD and being post partum on top of it. I also remember reading to expect spotting(whatever that may mean) for the first 3-4 months. I told myself I would give it a year to see if I'm happy with it. Even when I don't spot I seem to have a little discharge, not smelly or anything, but enough that I've started wearing pantyliners all the time. All in all I think it's gotten better with time, but I certainly know what you're going thru.

Well I had it removed for a couple of reasons, the heavy cramping and bleeding was getting to be too much AND I could no longer feel the strings to my IUD. I went in for my annual and they couldn't find them either. I had to have an ultrasound to find out if the IUD was even still there or if it had migrated elsewhere. It was fortunately still in there but had moved taking the strings with it. It was getting just to be too much of a hassle and an expensive one at that.

I got the Mirena last week and have had nothing but problems. Spotting only lasted a couple of days but I've had pain and pressure ever since. I went to the doc today and apparently the IUD has caused some sort of infection. Could have something to do with it falling out when she was inserting it and then putting the same one back in. I have to take some meds for a week and if I still have problems I have to have it removed. If I had to do it over again I wouldn't do it.

Edit: I talked to the woman that inserted the IUD and she said she just used the wrong term, that it didn't really fall out. At any rate, I still have this infection and pain and I think I am going to have it removed next week. It's been over 2 weeks.

This is my 2nd IUD. I had the first one for 5 years, had it removed and conceived within a month, and had the second inserted 2 years ago. I got a copper Paraguard both times. I have had no problems with either. It did not hurt to have it inserted (a little discomfort the 2nd time, but I think it was the different doc more than the IUD) or removed. I bled a little more the second time too, maybe 2-3 days with the 1st and 5-7 with the second. My first periods after insertion were a bit heavier, but returned to normal over time. Hang in there! It should get better!
