My dh took my grandmother to church

(This is not a discussion of religion, just something that got brought up during a sermon. I hope it's ok to post about it. If not, I will delete.)

I'm a serious lurker on this board, why don't I ever post? I don't know.

On Sunday, my dh took my g'ma to church (Catholic) and the priest said, during the sermon, that there was no reason to circumcise! Dh came home and told me and I was soooo happy, as well as shocked. I think about how many people were in that church and how many people heard that and how many babies might be saved because if it. The priest also said that there was nothing more tender than the sight of a mother nursing her baby!

Dh said the priest didn't stay talking about those things, but just mentioning them is big in my opinion.

Sounds like one cool priest.

Glad you decided to post about it!

I heard it too, on Sunday. That was actually one of St Paul's letter from the Bible, not the priest's words. My dh glanced over at me when the priest read that.

Sunday's second reading:

Gal 6:14-18

And, the first reading made reference to breastfeeding!

Is 66:10-14c

Do all catholic churches have sermons on the same scriptures? I did not know that... can someone confirm?

I saw a board outside the Catholic church in town which said, This Sunday: "The freedom to choose" and I looked at my DH and said- Oh- I would have liked to hear that sermon- and he said, "It wasn't on that." and I said- "You can always hope."

The readings are pretty much universal in that the same readings are read at the different locations throughout the world.

The daily & Sunday readings are universal; however, the the sermons will differ. While a homily (sermon) should make reference to the readings (or at least the Gospel), the homilist can embellish upon it/them at his own discretion.

My experience with the church was not so good.

I managed to cormer the pastor of a suburban mega church and asked him. He gave me a quick pat answer that he thought would silence me and I countered him. Suddenly, he was in a hurry and quickly passed me off to an assistant pastor. We met in his office a few days later and it quickly degraded to a knock-down-drag-out. He pretty much threw me out of his office and said he would set me up with a counsellor. She called me a few days later and started asking me questions with a "what's the deal here" kind of attitude. After a few minutes of conversation, she said "It's obvious you have done some study about this and I'm going to have to review the scriptures and get back to you." I never heard from any of them again. I also never went back to that church.

I don't blame you, Frank. I wouldn't have gone back, either.

But I would have kept looking.

I don't see a problem with the thread as long as it doesn't go into a discussion/debate of Catholic views on circ (if it did it could keep going -just in RS instead of here). Just sharing what was said isn't really religious discussion, kwim?

Just an FYI so no one thinks I am overlooking or playing favorites or not censoring just for the fun of it. (totally kidding folks )

A friend called me mentioning her new Presbyterian (sp?) church had the same reading too...

Hmmmm...my Dad Catholic) went this week and said nothing...lol HE is the person who gave us the "necessity of circ./cleanliness"speach when DS was born. I emailed Mom the Catholic stance and she begged me not to send it too him. I didn't (he is a know it all anyway!!) b/c he was embarrased enough when his speach ended in elarning DH -who was present and grinning-is intact!!
