Questions about sewing with Lastin

So I have an old machine from the 40's that works wonderfully, but does not have the 3 step zig zag that is needed to use Lastin clear elastic. Is there a way to sew this with a regular zig zag? I tried a few months ago, but gave up because I couldn't get it to pucker/stretch correctly once it was sewn. It worked on one leg and not the other. What did I do wrong?
TIA

I just have the basic machine and dont have a 3 step either. I just do a loose zig zag and it works just fine for us

Would you mind giving me a bit of a tutorial? Do you stretch the lastin just like you would swimsuit elastic? How do you start?

I use the same method as i do for reg braided elaastic.
first measure the required amount and cut. mark starting and ending point (on the fabric)
holding the edge of the elastic to the line lower your needle into the fab. then hand roll the needle (do not use pedel yet) 2 times them work back. on my machine i set my tensions to 3/3...but everymachine is diff.after edge is secured them strech your elastic making sure its even to the next marker. I always just pinch it in the fabric with one hand and guide it with the other. make sure not to over strech the elastic (lastin can snap easily)
make sure you also doublr back a bit at the end to make sure elastic is secured
