Quick question re: Serger & sewing

I am thinking about bidding on a serger online but in reading reviews of the machine the only con i saw was that it does not have a cover stitch. I have no idea what this is. Is it necessary when sewing diapers/covers on the edges? Thanks!

Nope. The cover stitch is that dual line of stitching you see on the hems of t-shirts and other knitted garments that finishes the edge at the same time. You definitely don't need that for serging diapers.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much! Good to know.

No problem -- what serger are you looking at? (I always like to drool...)

Nothing too fancy. I think I am going to get the Simplicity SL390. It got good reviews and I found it at amazon.com for $225. They have a $25 coupon and free shipping so I don't think I will get a better deal. Now it is just a matter of waiting for it to come. I have fabric I ordered and some here I was working with so I am anxious to get going.

Slightly OT (and not to hijack!!) but how much harder is it to serge than to sew? I'm a real novice but am enjoying making little projects and want to start making dipes for myself and friends.

i didn't end up ordering the serger. i am so incredibly sad but i rather save up some extra cash and upgrade to a white superlock 2000 ats.

calebsmama - i have not serged yet so i can't be sure but i think it would be easier. turning and top-stitching is a huge pain and it is harder to get nice looking edges that are symmetrical.

Calebsmama03 - Sewing is easier in some respects. Serging has a very large learning curve, but it is really fun! You should try it sometime. Especially if it's just for fun and not to sell. That means you have all the time in the world to perfect your technique without the pressure of producing for income.

vkberes - good choice about waiting. You'll probably be that much more happy when you do get it!

A bit harder - if you're doing straight lines, it's not tough at all. I use it to do good finished seams on clothing, which are usually straight or not tightly curved, and it's incredibly easy - certainly easier and less bulky than doing french seams or flat fell seams.

But, if you're trying to do curves, especially tight ones like on dipes, it takes a bit of practice. There are cheater ways to do it easily, though. Like, cut the pattern to the seam allowance rather than use the blade to cut the fabric, and then guide by the needles instead of by the blade.
