Science Fiction fans? - Page 2

How about Neal Stephenson? Snowcrash is the most famous, but "The Diamond Age" is perhaps more apropos to us parents.

And the Hyperion/Endymion series by Dan Simmons is just spellbinding. His other stuff is horror, though, and if you don't want to live with images, don't read it. I thought the Hyperion novels were worth their weight in gold, though.

KakuChan, absolutely, I forgot about "Hyperion" ... but I've been so out of the "reading rhythm" in the last few years (only go to the kids' section in bookstores & libraries ) that I didn't know there was a follow-up ("Endymion"?). Thanks for the info ...

Dan Simmons "Summer of Night"
& Robert McCammons "Boys Life"

are my 2 favorite books of all time.

Could Clive Barker be considered Sci-Fi?

Rachelle ... I think Clive Barker is more horror.

Well, I'm horrified whenever I've read him.

Actually there was one book of his I loved and the name is escaping me now, something with a wolf ... oh, well, it'll come to me at 3 in the morning, I'm sure.

Hey ladies...I just found this thread and thought I'd pop in.

I'm a HUGE Laurell K Hamilton fan. All of the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter books and her Merry Gentry (Fairy) books are amazing.I love her writing styles.

Other books we love in this house...Anything Tolkein, Peirs Anthony, Robert Aspirin (The Myth books are funny!!!)

Fortunately I married a man who LOVES to read and devours any book put in front of him (ok...MOST any book) because he's really sparked the reader in me...and hopefully Willow will enjoy reading as well.

Anyway...thanks for listening to me ramble...errr...watching me ramble.

I bleed green blood as well. I loved many of the classics and some of the new works. I love some Heinlien, mostly in that free love sort of way. One of my best faves is Glory Season by David Brin. Where late The Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm. Emergence by David Palmer. Ariel by Steven Boyett. Neena Gathering by Valerie Colander.

I have a family science fiction book club that meets quarterly. We let the kids run around like mad while we discuss science fic. It's so much fun!

Abi - I read that!!! What a great guy Thanks for sharing it

I'm a sci-fi/ fantasy geek, too One of my faves that hasn't been mentioned so far is Guy Gavriel Kay. (He's more fantasy than sci-fi, but really, I love him for his gorgeous prose!)

Oh, and I'm surprised no one mentioned Octavia Butler... she's a great writer!

Noami -- I can't wait to read your book!

Oh -- and the Eddings. I'm currently re-reading the Belgariad, which was one of the first sci-fi/ fantasy novels I read. I think I'll move onto Dune after that... I love that novel!

alexisyael, I read Naomi's book, I believe there is a sequel out now. I liked it, I found it very original which says a lot IMO. :LOL

Dune really? have you read all of them? If not I would recommend reading the rest of the series which is, of course, excellent. Some have difficulties getting through God Emperor but you don't want to stop there...the books after it are really good as well! I was trying to talk dd into being a Bene Gesserit with me for Halloween but she wanted to be a princess...*sigh* maybe next year. :LOL

Oh, being a Bene Geserit for halloween would have been fun!!!! (And you can be a Princess and a Bene Gesserit )

I have only really read the first Dune book, sad to say. Well, not exactly: I read Children of Dune, and I may possibly have read God Emperor of Dune, too - a very long time ago, but neither of those sparked my interest in the same way as Dune itself (which I have re-read several times).

I used to own a bootleg vhs copy of the extended edition of David Lynch's Dune -- couldn't believe my bad luck when I lost both tapes (maybe lent it to someone?) The extended edition is SO much better!

Oh -- and we almost named our Dog Mauadib (sp?) : : : But then when he came to us, he had been given a very silly name that started with a "P" and for continuity's sake, we decided to give him a "P" name (he went from "Perky" to "Pinter" -- after the theater of the absurd playwright).

I shall look into getting Naomi's book Need something to read next week while I'm on the plane!

Just wanted to second alexisyael's reco of Guy Gavriel Kay. I'm totally loving "The Fionavar Tapestry" triology right now! Wonderfully written fantasy books!!!!!

I had to add to this thread! I read more sci-fi than any other genre (lots of fantasy as well). My favorite author by far and away is Octavia Butler. If you haven't read her yet I hereby command you to go purchase one of her books. Her main characters are always strong women, both mentally and physically. I got to see her speak once and it was wonderful.

I also love Orson Scott Card, George R.R. Martin, Asimov, Heinlein (some books a lot, others not at all), Tad Williams, and the list goes on and on. Currently I'm reading a Williams book while waiting impatiently for Martin to release his latest. It's good to see other sci-fi fans here!

How did I miss this thread! I re-read Dune so many summers in a row that all my college friends still tease me about it! My mom was a sci-fi fan so I grew up surrounded by all the old school stuff: Bradbury, Asimov, Heinlein. After college I shacked up for quite a while with a guy who had a subscription to Analog magazine. I'd never heard of it before, but it's pretty good.
