Question on sewing fabric to cpfs

I saw some beautiful cpf with decorative fabric sew down the middle layer and wanted to try this myself to spruce up my pfs but had some questions.

first off, should I wash the fabric and the cpf before sewing them together? I'm scared the pf's will shrink more than the cotton fabric.

If I don't have a serger will the fabric fray or should I do a zig zag stitch on the edges?

Will any cotton work, or should I look for something in particular to use?

Thanks,
Charis

If I wanted to do this, which I do, I would first make sure that the cpfs are well broken in, washed in hot water with detergent, then dried on high at least 5 times. I would chose a smooth cotton print or a high quality flannel, and prewash those in hot water/high heat for drying as well. You are right, the fabric and the cpfs will both shrink and they will shrink differently.

I am going to sew on the decorative panel by turning the edges of the panel under and topstitching into place. This way it will look very neat and I will not have to worry about fraying or anything like that. I don't have a serger (yet!) so that is not an option for me either. You could slip some trim between the layer before topstitching too, for added cuteness.

Warning! If you add a decorative fabric to your prefolds, you won't be able to use the center leg of your snappi to fasten the diaper. Pins are recommended, I am practicing pinning now so that I will be ready.

Thanks for the info.

I didn't think about the snappi not working on them.

That's a good idea about washing them seperately and then sewing them together. Can't wait to try it.

I just did this recently to make a camo dipe for ds. I used a cotton bandana and turned/topstitched. It came out really cute! It's a cheap way to get really cute dipes. Now I can't stop scouring fabric store remnant bins for cool scraps. Have fun!

Some people don't use the bottom leg of the snappi. They just cut it off
& close the sides of the pf only.
