Bfing "Six Feet Under"

I'm talking about the HBO show, "Six Feet Under." Nate and Lisa are AP parents and the show makes it clear that Lisa bfeeds and they co-sleep. Recently Lisa died and on the last show Nate (the dad) was talking to one of their relatives about how Lisa's death has been affecting him and Maya (the baby) and something about Maya having an oral fixation. Then the relative said that it wasn't suprising since she was still bfing (when her mama died). Maya is closing in on 2 yo as far as I can tell!

Now it's not clear if Lisa is really dead or not, but that's another post

wow. I have HBO but never watched the show.. I think I'm going to start watching it though, interesting!

yeah, that's the show where I first heard about fenugreek, and I thought it was a joke - some made-up word!

But what always bugged me about the show is that Lisa took off on a long weekend trip to see her sister and didn't bring her nursing daughter with her! (and that is when she disappeared)

I dont have cable, and the last show i saw was a month or so ago at my aunts house....but Lisa is dead, right??? this cant be a spoiler, as it already happened a long time ago. they found her body on the beach or something where she was visiting. last I heard, cause of death wasnt determined. I know Nate handled the body (unless that was a dream sequence) so its pretty final.

she drowned, not sure if it was foul play or self inflicted.

also, Maya didnt seem more than a year or so last time I saw her. she didnt walk or talk....but perhaps alot happened since the last episode I saw. (but Lisa has been gone/dead for months, so Maya must of been even younger) Lisa was a great mom, too bad her and Nate were having so many problems. (personally, I think Nate is a big loser, and never really tried with Lisa, never gave her a fair shot...he has SOOO many issues) I remember seeing when she was questioning vac's, told Nate she didnt want to do them, and she printed out some stuff from the internet for him to read. I also saw them all sleeping together lots of times (but Maya was usually on the end of the bed, with Lisa's arm around her, who actually sleeps with a squirmy baby on the end of a bed with a frame and everything??) she was in a playpen a few times, but it was when Lisa and Nate were having 'alone' or drama time,

I remember the first time I saw Lisa, she was talking about how she didnt watch movies, as she is vegan and the film is on gelatin or something. and she had this cute sign in her bathroom that said 'if its yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down' :LOL

oh well...they had to kill her off. whatever...just the man further pushing strong, intelligent, socially and environmentally concious women down :LOL

keep me updated, as I cant watch anymore.....

well Lisa did "die" and was buried with a funeral and everything, but in the last episode a psychic told Nate that she is still "alive" (on some level??) and trying to "reach" him.

yeah she was a very crunchy cool mom, but she did act a little psycho with Nate, like not telling him she was pregnant until she was almost due, and showing up all of a sudden on his doorstep... and acting like they had been in love and a couple for years and years when in fact they were dating for a while in Seattle (?) and then Nate moved back home to CA when his dad died and their relationship ended and then he had this whole drawn out thing with Brenda, whom he met on the plane coming home to CA.

Can you tell I am hooked on this show???

ETA: to clarify how she could have become pregnant: Nate had to go to Seattle for business or something and he looked her up and they "hooked up" and then he went back home and the rest, as they say, is herstory...

adrienne, thanks..thats all the exact stuff I missed! I didnt see any episodes in between or the newer ones!

(I only watched the show through 'hbo on demand' and it only showed select ones...while i was at a clients house doing laundry) yes, I was charlie buckets mom :LOL doing laundry during the day for rich people who had HBO on demand (not that only rich people have that, but only rich people can afford for me to come and do their laundry )

When Lisa was still alive, they had an episode where she went to a food show for a day (she was a chef, I think) and they talked about her pumping. She told Nate about all the bottles in the fridge and he said something like "you must be proud" and she kind of grabbed her chest and said yes. Her breastfeeding was mentioned on several episodes. I remember because it was either right before or right after dd was born (yes, I have foggy mama brain!!)

Yes, you're right... the episode last night was supposedly a few mo after she "died," but Maya was def a toddler when she died, kwim?

I just got into the show last season so I don't know a lot of the early history (thanks Adrienne!). Yeah, Lisa is a little kooky, but I still like her. She told Nate she wanted to be buried in the ground, w/ nothing around her... and Nate gave her parents someone else's ashes (perk to working at a funeral home, lol) and took her body and buried it himself. That was a real tearjerker! But they only identified her body from her lower jaw so now Nate is not so sure she is dead (after meeting w/ a psychic). So who knows! Can't wait for next week

I haven't watched it in a long time, but i remember last years season opener when nate is waking up from surgery and it shows several "realities" it shows lisa nursing, mentions fenugreek and the maple smell, and shows all of them in bed together.

i used to love that show, when is the finale on? i can never keep track of the hbo seasons.

They're at about the 4th episode of the new season. Should be another month or so of new episodes.

yes, this is cool, but... why did she have to pump? I mean, if she was such an uber-crunchy mama, and she was staying at home with baby (even when she worked, baby was at her side) she didn't need to pump. That bugged me, too. It was like the writers were trying to portray the ultimate natural mama but still had to bow to the general public concensus of how babies are parented.

And I also got the vibe that the show was making fun of her, like she was a little bit weird or freaky for how she was mothering. Even her own sister in the last episode sounded a bit snide when she commented on how the baby was still bfing when her mother died.

Don't get me wrong - it is way cool that they are portraying all of this but I just don't like the negative conotations that are sometimes linked with it. I'd love to see a popular show that sincerely and lovingly portrays and validates a mother like Lisa.

I agree with Adrianne. Lisa was portrayed as a nutball, and I find that offensive, now. At the time, I was still working for an ob/gyn and planning on a radiation filled pregnancy and a totally drugged delivery. So, at the time, I thought she WAS a nutball.

Looking back on it now, there are certainly some things about her that were quite a bit, "out there" but, there are some things about me that are a bit out there, too

I think it's sad that breastfeeding, co-sleeping, etc. is almost always portrayed as weird on tv (like Six Feet Under). Or as the running joke (Jackie on Roseanne). But at least it is being shown. To get OT - I know Jackie on Roseanne was my first awareness of breastfeeding, I'd never seen or even remember hearing about it before. My brother and I are the youngest kids in our family and my parents' friends have kids our age, so there was no where to be exposed to it except on tv. Maybe some day it won't be weird or the joke, it will just be normal and casual.

I understand where you're coming from with the portrayal of Lisa, but let's be fair - everybody on this show is a little out there, weird, and or freaky in one way or another. That's what I like so much about it - they're like real people, living real (if a bit overly melodramatic) lives.

Re. Maya's age - several show-months passed between the last episode of last season and the first of this season, but she also did some of that TV series rapid aging that soap operas are famous for. I'd guess they aged her at least 6 months.

Someone said, I think on the second or third episode, "That was six months ago!" referring to something that had happened in the previous episode. So, Maya should be aged about a year since Lisa's disappearance.
