possible UTI in 5-year old?

help! my son (5, uncirc) has been potty trained well over a year and NEVER had any accidents OR night-wetting, even during potty-training. All of a sudden he's had several day-accidents AND a couple night-wettings so I'm wondering if he may have a UTI? I tried cranberry extract tablets for him for the last week and it doesn't seem to have helped much. Is there any other natural cures or should I take him in for antibiotics? FWIW, molestation is NOT a possibility (all the sites I'm reading mention that as a possibility!). I'm a SAHM and with them 24/7.

Is he peeing frequently? Is it painful for him to pee? Those are other signs of a possible UTI.

Sometimes stress, lack of sleep, anxiety, changes in routine, etc. can cause a potty-trained child to have accidents.

Hi mama,
My dd, who is 8 now, has had several UTIs. Actually, she had to go in for an ultrasound, because she was having recurring UTIs, and it turns out that she had kidney reflux. Apparently, when she'd urinate, a bit of the pee would go back up into her kidney, causing a UTI.
Anyway, with the first one that she had, we used the cranberry juice and cranberry extract tablets, and it seemed to help. But once she had it again, we decided to her to ped. He did prescribe her something, and I can't think of the name of it right now, but I will check when I get home.
It was rather painful for her, she would need to go to the bathroom *all* the time, but could barely go. A few times she also ran a pretty high fever as well.
I'd definitely reccomend seeing your ped, the meds really helped her. Good luck with your ds! I hope he feels better!

Symptoms are different for UTI for men and women -- men don't tend to have the pain and burning issues that women do. But the test is easy (especially since its easier for guy to pee in the cup) and painless, so why not take him to the ped to be sure? The whole cranberry thing never worked for me, so he may need antibiotics to solve the problem.

thanks ladies!

I think we WILL do the appointment route. It's just NOT normal for him and he's so busy playing all the time that it's hard to get out of him if something hurts, etc. I'm hoping a U/A will be able to clear things up and I suppose there are worse things than some antibiotics.. right?

As one who had an undiagnosed/untreated UTI that lead to to a kidney infection, several days in the hospital, potential kidney failure and lots of more intense and more painful treatment, there are definitely things worse than a straight course of antibiotics!

Constipation can cause pee accidents.

I'm relieved to hear this post tonight, in fact I came here specifically hoping someone could help me with my five year old son. He's also had daytime accidents recently and nightime accidents. and like you he's not abused in any form so I'm totally stumped. I'll call the ped too. I dont' get it he's never had accidents like this even when potty training and he's been trained for two years now!~
I didn't know boys could get urinary tract infections

Thanks,
Valerie

Not constipation! In fact he had a poop accident yesterday even. I'm seriously freaked out! I do think however that the poop accident was just forgetfullness. he gets SO wrapped up in playing and we'd just returned from a 10-day vacation so he's been missing his toys and backyard.

Valerie, glad to hear I'm not the only one with this issue. I was bawling my eyes out last night thinking there must be something REALLY WRONG! He potty trained (age 4) in 5 days flat and NEVER looked back.

Please have him checked out for a UTI. But because he pooped yesterday it does not necessarily mean he is not constipation.

There is a disorder called Encoperis. The softer bm can work its way around the blockage. Often times with Encoperis what happens is the kid will bm every day a little bit. Some times having many bm and pee accidents through out the day. It can actually seem to have an entire bm. Then every 3 or more days (10). Really have a "load" almost clogging the toilet.

The pressure from the blockage can give mix signals to the bladder.
