My son will not keep a hat on his head, or sunglasses, or tolerate application of sunscreen and it's stressing me out. Sometimes I can get the hat on and then distract him for a while and he forgets about it, but usually he removes it right away. I want to put a strap on the hat with velcro like this:

I have a khaki Old Navy bucket hat that it seems like it would be easy to add a strap to. But whenever I try to do something crafty I have to mess up a few times before I figure out the "right" way to do it...I am hoping if I ask for advice first I will get some good tips on how to go about this. Are there any pitfalls I should look out for? Has anyone else done a similar modification to a hat?
