Scary conversation with Playtex about Sippies - Page 3

MamaE and Anit--yes, those ARE the sippies I am talking about. Mine had no number either, thus the reason I called Playtex. The #2 playtex sippies (taller, more opaque, no handles) are still on the market. I just bought some from ToysRus, and my girlfriend just got some from Target. Just don't get the insultated or straw versions--because those are #5's.

PilesofLaundry, I have never had anything glass (pyrex) or ceramic break in the oven or microwave -- and I usually put it in straight from the fridge.

Well I have to go into town today anyway, guess I will buy something else. She can't figure out how to drink out of those anyway. We always end up taking the lid off and helping her have a drink of water. I have 1 cup from when dd #2 was a baby but I can't find the lid. That is first years anyway. Thanks for for letting me know so I can replace it with something safer.

Wow. dd has two sippies. One I put away a while ago because it was Gerber and I saw it listed as one with bad plastics. The other is a dept. store brand. We wouldn't use them at all, since dd can drink fine out of a glass, but she likes to purposely dump water out, and she likes to throw them, so we do have a need for sippies. Must go find replacements!

Doublecheck on #1 safety. My info says it's for one time use only; ie. it's fine for single use bottle water, etc. but don't reuse it.

so what are some good sippys to use?

geez, you mamas made me rush adn check my sippy cups, all of mine say 2 up under them, so that's good, right? except some geberic ones I have that have no number, what's up with that?
so what's the best that you can buy ?

I went to target last night to get some new cups. I only found ONE TYPE in the whole section that had numbers at all. They were some playtex ones and they had a 2. Those are what I ended up getting. I was looking at the Avent naturally ones. There were no numbers so I didn't buy them, but does anyone know anything about them?? They looked like they would be easier for my baby to use.

Could you all link some information on non-reusable plastics?

Go to the Green Guide and look up plastics safety. Might be listed under kitchen plastics? You can get a few articles on it before they require a member ID. It's pretty interesting.

I think the link is

Nope, I couldn't get on. I'd really like to see some backup for this information.

I'm not sure about the this, ya'll...

Workin' on it:

"Take a look at the recycling stamp on the bottom of your commercial plastic water bottle. The "safer" plastic is identified by a number "1" in the stamp or the letters "PET" or "PETE" on the bottom of the plastic container. Other "safe" plastics are identified by a number "2" in the stamp or the letters "HDPE" (high density polyethylene), a number "4" in the stamp or the letters "LDPE" (low density polyethylene), and a number "5" in the stamp or the letters "PP" (polypropylene).

According to the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) however, all the plastics listed above are in containers intended for one- time use only, in a cool, room environment."

Here's some stuff on the study: http://www.findarticles.com/p/articl...1/ai_105163668

I see where you're goin' with this and can see the point to some extent. The advice seems to be not to reuse it over long periods because they feel water bottles need to be washed and frequent washing could break down #1 plastic. I do reuse #1 but not for very long because I don't find it to be that hardy.
