I never make mine to thick, and i was happier that way with ds2. he always messed it before wet it so we did not need much abaorbtion. the layers depend on what hemp you are using.
the ones i just made for our are just 2 layer flannel body with a 2 layer hemp frech terry sewn in soaker. then i made a snap in doubler the same.
so total i had 4 layers flannel 4 layers hemp french terry

that sounds like a lot for a nb!
hmm..ok..i was just gonna try 2 layers of hemp fleece with NO soakers or doublers or anything .lol
guess i better rethink this

but remember flannel is very thin.
some say 2 layers = hf
i say about 4
so its not really that much.

What sort of hemp are you using? hemp french terry & hemp fleece are similar in absorbancy, but hemp jersey requires double the amount of layers (joey bunz are made out of this).

For a newborn, you could probably do 3 layers of hemp (jersey=6 layers) and have a decent dipe. Especially since you change so often when they are ittie bittie. If you want to make the hemp last longer, though, you could pick up some cheapie flannel from walmart & use a layer or two of that to "pretty it up" as body layers, then use 2 layers of hemp (again...jersey would be 4 layers).

For my ds, I am happy using a prefold with a 3 layer hemp french terry insert as a diaper, so the above should work fine for a newborn! Have fun!

I'm trying to get started on the same... NB dipes.
But I don't know how much fabric to get started with. I plan on making approx 12 small fitted or AIO's. and then going from there. I already purchased some flannel from WalMart. Now I need to get terry for the soakers and something else for the outer and inner fabric, right? How much do I plan on per diaper?

Thanks!

Isn't diaper making fun?! If you haven't already, join the yahoo group sewyourowndiapers -- there are lots of informative mamas there. I would also suggest, that since you don't have an ittie bittie to test the dipes on, that you buy a pattern -- there's a better chance that the dipe will fit right, kwim? Or perhaps you could buy a dipe you like tear it apart & duplicate it -- but remember not to sell them afterwards! :LOL

The only pattern I bought, poopockets (one sized dipe) & side-snapping poopockets, had very clear instructions on what supplies you needed & how much yardage, etc. Everyone has their opinion of what fabrics are best, but most agree that hemp is unbeatable. I wouldn't buy regular terry cloth, after having worked with it when making recycled material dipes -- it's too bulky for the amount of absorbancy (sp??) you get.

I don't use anything on the inside of the dipes -- just the absorbant materials, because I prefer to only have natural materials against my ds's privates. If you want to make aio's I would buy a little of both fleece & pul to see which you prefer. You can also use wool, but those would be "almost" in ones...

Of course, if you've used cloth with your older children, you may have preferences already!

Anywho...hope that helps! I have to get sewin' some newborn dipes soon myself!

I'm also getting ready to sew some newborn dipes and have been trying to figure this out, too! I'm thinking two layers of hemp fleece in the body plus an outer decorative layer, plus two layers of the same in the soaker. Or the equivalent--I have hemp jersey, too. Plus some flannel and organic terry and even some interlock that I want to use up. I'm determined to use up all the fabric I have, so I guess I'm going to improvise and hope for the best!

Well, I just joined the yahoo group, sewyourowndiapers. Can't wait to get in on it all! Thanks for pointing that out.

So far I have some flannel for the interior piece, and just ordered two yds of sherpa... don't know yet what I plan on doing with it.. maybe on the inside?? I'm hoping to find a good deal on hemp somewhere!

I plan on hitting some tag sales today, to get some cheap fabric from shirts or whatever just so I can practice before cutting into the good stuff! Wish me luck!

how would this work? i make a dipe and swap with another mama who sews dipes? if so, that sounds fun!! i make pocket fitteds or plain fitteds and pocket AIOs with pro-care...i have 100% cotton fleece, hemp jersey, flannel, and birdseye, and knit interlock on hand and can make whatever combo one would like. oh, and i line all my pockets/plain fitteds with fleece for the stay-dry effect.
