Wow, I made something!

I've never sewn anything in my life. Then I got this wild hair, and decided to make an ABC (Asian Baby Carrier). It looked pretty simple. So I went to the fabric store (they were extremely helpfully considering how ignorant I was), and sat down in front of my new sewing machine.

Two weeks later my simple craft is (almost) done. Done enough that I tried it with DS, and know it works. But I still have to add some finishing touches.

I very proud of myself, but at the same time I look at this ABC and laugh. It's the frankenstein monster of ABCs. Totally functional, but exceedingly ugly. I underestimated the length of the straps, the overcompensated by adding like 500 yards of extra fabric. My seams are crooked and the thread clashes. Plus a couple of other *mishaps* that I'm not going to mention If I swallow my pride, I might even post a few pictures...

But still, I feel like this is my great coming out! I made something myself with a sewing machine!

Please please show us pictures! I think it is cool to see what kinds of things other people make (including the mishaps!). Maybe we should all post our mess-ups on a thread...I bet it would be hilarious to see all the things people have tried. I am embarrased to admit I tried to make a diaper bag out of an old pair of jeans, and it is not finished to this day...and I don't think it ever will be!

Anyway, I am sure yours isn't as bad as you say it is. Can we see it?

I know how you feel -- I made the ugliest dipe for my ds on my first try...it was really scary!

Congrats on sewing your first project, though!! I'm sure it will work wonderfully, and you can always make another eventually & use the first one for wash day (or keep it in the car for when you forget!).

Hey that is awesome! The first diaper I made my DD wasn't functional, so you're one up on me! Share pics!

Oh please post some pics! And I hope you had enough fun to want to keep sewing. I think so many newbie sewers can't get past the "it took so long and it's so ugly" stage that is so neccessary to get the practice needed to have it look good and not take forever. I feel really blessed that I learned to sew so young (started before I was 5) that I got to go through that phase when I didn't care what the result looked like My sister started learning in Jr. High and she was pretty good, but when her stuff didn't look as good as mine (even though I'd been sewing for about 10 years by then), she gave up and never tried again.

Thanks, Rubelin, for the awsome pep talk. Believe it or not, I have not been deterred! I made another sling (a Rebozo type) that came out really pretty. All I really needed to do for this sling was make a few hems, but still. I'm shocked they actually came out straight. And I made myself an extra long and really nifty head scarf. The head scarf has some ugly bits, but it's so comfy and in the exact type of material I love (go figure - I picked it out myself ). I bought three more types of fabric to make some more.

I'll try my best to remember to get some pics. Hee Hee .

Anyone else interested is posted pic of their scary-ugly handiwork?

I need to see this ugly thing!!! :LOL

I made one a while ago and while it came out well, the fabric is the ugliest stuff and I am embarassed to wear it out!

:LOL I made all of the straps twice as long as they should be! I didn't want them to be too short, so now I have to wrap the waist straps around me 3 times and I can't even tell you what I have to do with the shoulder straps! And I have two huge bows at my butt when I have the baby on my back! I'll take more pics tomorrow. And I'm wearing what was going to be our curtains!
