Have any of you heard of the zero waste program? I know it is implemented in another country, but a group here in Spokane is working on it for our city. It is very exciting, and would create so many jobs!! EVERTHING gets recycled. They would give you a composting can, and a couple of recycling cans, and trash is so discouraged it would only be picked up once a month. It sounds amazing, and I watched a program on it one night when i went to a zero waste forum thing.

I think that's a pretty awesome idea. I know we only put out one small can/week.
But, I think it'd bug me to only have it once/month. What about meat scraps? Bears are a big issue here and I can imagine it'd get pretty smelly sitting in the garage that long. Or the doggy poop bag. I mean, that's a lot of poopoo to be sitting around for a month in the hot sun. And, I'm not religious enough to set up a poop composter.

But, in general, I think recycling should be the norm and it's awesome when a city gov. supports that. I hate driving down my neighborhood and seeing all the cardboard boxes, etc. sitting out on trash day.

Hmmm...I'm not sure how they deal with meat scraps...I watched the video a while ago...and definately not sure about the poo thing, but I would assume they would want you to compost it. Poo in the landfills is a very bad thing...

This freaks a lot of people out, because that's what it *looks* like is happening here, as well. However, at least in our city, the garbage trucks were re-designed to have a separation in the middle, so that actual garbage goes in one side, and the recycling goes in the other. I bet this is what is happening where you are, as well.

Ditto what veganmamma said, actually. DH and I are COMPULSIVE recyclers. Lucky for us, our city RECENTLY adobted alley recycling bins--so we have to take our glass, paper, plastic 1/2 way down the alley. Not bad. But for the last 15 years, when we lived in cities or towns that didn't offer neighborhood recycling we ALWAYS made our own container (sometimes just a couple paper bags) and would DRIVE or WALK to a recycle center a couple times a week. We were "religious" about it. Even now, if we are at a party or a family members house, and we know they don't recycle--we take our garbage (and theirs!) with us -- and find a bin. It's so EASY! Even in small towns, most grocery stores have recycle bins.

Wow, I was really to see this question at MDC! :LOL I thought everyone here recycled religiously. That's what I voted & we use cloth diapers too.

* I remember reading (I think it was) Stupid White Men by Micheal Moore and he did say something about all of the recycling just getting dumped with all of the trash. It was pretty discouraging and did make me wonder if I'm just wasting my time.
