Your best advice for sewing gussets

I've tried a few times and they never seem to match up, what is your best advice for sewing gussets?

I've only used gussets making the PooPockets-pattern diapers. My best advice is to mark the diaper and the gusset with an air/water soluble fabric marker, then match those up and start sewing slowly. Stop every few stitches with the needle is down to ensure you're on track; hold the fabric layers just behind the presser foot with your left hand and stretch out the gusset so it's in line with the contour of the diaper with your right.

Once you do a few, it gets much easier.

Hope this helps!

I haven't actually made anything with gussets, but I do have this set of instructions in my bookmarks:
http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/inde...by/crafts.html (scroll down for instructions on gussets)

I don't know whether or not that will help you. It sorta sounds to me like you might simply be working with a difficult fabric... like PUL, perhaps? I've had to pull out the arsenal of notions when I'm working with that stuff.

First, I always glue-baste the edges with a water-soluble fabric glue. That usually keeps the layers together well enough that I can sew without worrying about mismatched edges.

If for some reason that's not enough (like when I'm stitching down the opening for t&t'd AIOs), I also "pin" the edges with paper clips (to avoid unnecessary holes).

And if my presser foot ever seems to stick to the fabric (like when its laminate side is up), I switch to a walking foot.

Whew!! And this is why I just bought 4 PUL covers instead of making them. I'm just waaaay too anal... :LOL

are you serging or sewing?

when i do gussets with my zig zag stitch...i do a long stitch first to kind of baste and then go back and do shorter stitch to be sure it is connected.

no serger here...sorry can't help if you're serging

i sometimes machine baste them on, then serge. at least tack down both ends with e quick short zigzag or something. i suppose pins would accomplish the same thing...
