making fabric books?

My son (10 months) has a couple books made from cloth that are nice for him to play with because he doesn't have the idea yet not to chew on his board books. He is also really fascinated by different textures. I have a friend who is expecting and I thought it would be nice to pick several different fabrics with interesting textures and stitch them together into a "book" for her baby. I've seen a low-nap fake fur and a fine-wale corduroy that I think would both work. Maybe some velour too, and something satin-y, and some flannel. Oooh, I have some giraffe-print flannel, that could be fun. I was just wondering if anyone else has made something like this and if you've got any pointers or tips.

This sounds like so much fun! My DSIL made a fabric book for DD, it's appliqued and embroidered to illustrate a story she wrote, and I think it's the most amazing thing. No hints to offer, but I'd love to see yours when it's done!

I recently made a small 2'x2' play quilt for my baby. I had never quilted before, but have sewn for a while. It worked out great! I found a print we liked and then nine squares of textured material, I made small strips of print to go between the squares. JoAnn's is having their big clearance and I found most of it there. I washed it all together, so when I need to wash it again, I won't have shrinking/color running issues. It went together very quickly.

Also, I have a store bought book like that. Each page has a textured fabric on top of a basic cotton. The textured fabric is in the shape of something, animal or thing and then an applique stich around it.

Good luck!
