I'm seriously thinking about starting to make my own diapers and for my friend that is TTC, if I'm going to do it I want a good sewing machine , serger and snap press that will hold up to getting used alot and can sew hemp, bindings on wool covers etc... If I'm any good at it, Imight try to make some to sell. So whats the best models, prices where to buy?
Thanks

I really like my Pfaff Machines. They can sew and serge through anything!! I also like the KAM snap press I got from www.thesnapstore.com.

I have two Vikings. I've had them both for a while and they preform great! The serger is newer and still available, it's the entry model Viking (936?) w/o the electronics. I couldn't justify spending another $800+ on electronics to show you which settings for different fabrics, the manual works just fine for me! I got my snap press from the One Stop Diaper Shop. They have on-line directions for the snap press and are very friendly!

I am a lover of all things Viking. My mom has 2 viking sewing machines, 2 viking embroidery machines, and a viking serger. I have a singer sewing machine and a simplicity serger -- but I do 99.9% of my sewing at my MOM's. I love her machines to pieces, though I hope they never end up that way!

I have the snap press from thesnapstore.com. I have an older model Kenmore sewing machine and a Janome 644D serger. I don't think that you need *the best* sewing machine and serger, you just need to be able to use them! I do wish that I had a BabyLock serger with automatic tension though!

Hmm, with what I've learned the past month or two, I wouldnt buy a serger till I'd tried it out in the store with several layers of hemp! I've got two machines at my disposal and neither of them can handle it - a 10 or so year old Husqvarna and a 2 year old Brother and both have completely choked on more than 2 layers, and 2 layers are difficult.

My 26 year old Janome sewing machine on the other hand has no problems. I think for sewing diapers, the most basic machine will suffice, because you dont need fancy stitches, twin needles or anything.

Jachut, You probably have done this, but just in case... have you loosened the tension of the pressure foot? I was having the choking, stopping, just not working with more than two layers and I loosened the setting as far as I could and now it totally cuts and serges through 3 or 4 layers and even works with 5.
