sheets?

Years ago, I used to sew many household things from sheets since the material is machine washable and the colors bright and I could make many things that matched!

Is this still acceptable?

I did this when I graduated from college, and I did not have much money. Later, I when I became a SAHM I still sewed, but my time gradually was taken up with other things.

Now, with one DS age 12 at home, I would like to redecorate my home, but I do not want it to appear too tacky or gauche.

I sew well. I have been able to create many interesting things. I am in the process now of making cushion covers for my breakfast nook. But the rest of my home beckons.

Help me. Would things as draperies, duvets, pillows, and cushions sewn from sheets appear as kind of lousy?

I made curtains from sheets and you can't even tell! I get compliments on them all the time. There's no other way to get that much fabric for so cheap.

Just want to add that tablecloths are another source of generous yardage, and tend to come in more 'home dec' style prints and solids. I have hung them straight out of the package with clips on a rod for many compliments.

I think the trick to using sheets is to be sure that they don't look like sheets in the end. If you take a sheet with satin trim along the top hem, run a line of stitching for a casing and hang them, they will look like sheets. But if you just treat it as fabric, cut off the hem and add tabs for instance, then who is to know?

I am using sheets to cover a headboard and to create window panels with wide stripes, sort of a colorblock effect, and so far it doesn't look like sheets.

I have also used tablecloths to recover things and make curtains. I found at a half price sale these great french tablecloths--one had a sunflower print, the other was a bright golden rod color cigales. They were both gorgeous! I recovered our old dining chairs with the sunflowers, and made curtains from the cigale print one. We sold that set of dining chairs last year when we bought our new dining set, and the women who bought it were in love with the print on the chairs and the curtains, so I threw in the curtains with the set. People were always telling me how much they loved the bright colors and patterns.

You can find them at french stores or online:

I have used sheets to make curtains (white is nice--especially when there is an edge with eyelette lace) too. Both of my girls have curtains in their rooms that I made of sheets. I also have made them dresses with sheets. I made simple sleeveless dresses using Disney Princess printed sheets--they love those dresses!

Take care,
Lisa

Yes! Yes! I did use them for a round table cloth twenty-two years ago!! I also made matching placemats and napkins to go with the curtains!!

I still have them also.

I agree that you simply cannot get that much material for such a low price.

I had done this years ago, and I was wondering if any of you still did this!

Thank you!!

I don't see why not. Sheer yardage at fantastic widths! Who could ask for more?
