Baby Gear: The good, the bad, and the "don't bother" - Page 2

Reading through this thread reminds me of what it was like when ds was born.

Thing I couldn't live without
Sling until he was four months and too heavy.
moses basket We lived in a two story and it was a great place to put him when downstairs.
Baby Trekker at four months old. It was so comfortable and I loved being able to put him on my back or front. www.babytrekker.com
I forgot about the flannel crib pad until I saw it here. We loved them
Boppy for nursing
nightlight for night changes and nursing
bouncer DS loved being in it. I could cook I really hope this baby will like it so it will be at the table during dinner.
stroller in step jogger I love this stroller. It reclines so you can put infant in it. We didn't use it until ds was two months

I can't think of anythin else right now. I'm sure there is more.

I have had 3 babies- one who is adopted and VERY different from the others...

Essentials-
tiny tshirts I especially like the side snapping for newborns as it is easy to change diapers, and don't go over the head which Angelo REALLY hated.
cloth diapers- my sons are really sensitive to disposables. We use mainly aios.
booties/socks
sling- Angelo really loves his, my other two could have cared less
carseats
washable breast pads- I went through a ton of these, I can't imagine how much trash that would have been
layette gowns- again easy to change diapers in the middle of the night- no snaps to fiddle with, just flip up, change diaper, and flip down. Plus, some have foldover sleeves so baby doesn't scratch their face my babies have mostly worn these and tshirts and home
one or two outfits with legs- my dh hated clothes that had snaps up and down the legs, he always would snap one row OFF somehow. But, a pull on pant he liked fine, and you will need some for traveling in the carseat.

A QUALITY breast pump.

I thought of more...

CPFs for catching opposite breast's letdown, I had about 2 doz just for this purpose last time! I needed one or two for every feeding the first few months.

Baby monitor, I didn't ever need or use this. I could hear her anywhere I went in the house.

Breast pump, I have used it on occasion, and am glad I got one. I have the Isis, and I'm glad that's all I bought. It does a wonderful job, and doesn't cost a fortune. I wouldn't invest in an expensive electric one unless you plan to pump on a daily basis. The Isis gets the milk out just fine

Co-sleeper

If you ever consider selling that co-sleeper, let me know! I am trying desperately to get my hands on one that's secondhand!

I agree with all the people who say that a breastfeeding pillow like a Brestfriend or a boppy is a valuable thing to have. My pillow saved our breastfeeding relationship. If you can get that used or handed down it will be fine, but if not, a new one is inexpensive. You can get an inflatable Brestfriend and pack it for travel. I used these for months until I got the hang of things.

If you have a car, you will need an up-to-date car seat. Don't get a second hand one unless it is less than five years old, you have a manual with all the parts, and you check on line to make sure it has not been recalled. After doing a bit of reading, we decided to get a special infant seat for a small baby and switch to another seat (a Britax) for when he got older. I think it's really worthwhile to spend money on this!

Our baby hated bathing in the baby bathtub. He loves bathing in the big tub. YMMV. Also, our first baby bathtub leaked. Not a worthwhile use of plastic!

We got our high chair, bouncy seat (not an electric one, feh!) and stroller as hand-me-downs. They all worked fine. Make sure to look up safety information on these items too, but you can use one that is more than 5 years old.

We have used several different kinds of baby-wearing devices. He didn't like the sling at first so we got an expensive front-pack carrier that we liked a lot, and then we used the slings later. Our experience was that he didn't like the stroller as a little guy but grew to like it later, and it expanded our options for carrying him.

Our co-sleeper bassinet worked well, but he outgrew it at 6 months and didn't transition to a crib. So I can't recommend it if you want your baby to do that. If you plan to co-sleep and are just nervous about having an under 6 month old in the bed, then go for it. We now use it as a changing table, so it wasn't a waste of money.

Baby clothes are expensive so if you can get friends to hand them down or relatives to buy them for you, that's a great thing! The most essential items for a newborn until three or four months are those receiving blankets, and they stay useful for a long time. You can swaddle babies with them when they are teeny and then later cover them up with them, and if you have a few you won't have a hassle washing them. For some reason we got a lot of pretty ones as presents.

Gosh I love this thread!!!!!! Okay so I am doing this for the second time too so I have a post to make. With dd #1 I was a single mama. Any "we" I speak of refers to my mother who was absolutely a GEM during that baby stage!!!!!
So the good stuff(stuff we couldnt' live without) included:

Avent Isis breast pump(I went bck to wor at 6 weeks and Madyson weaned herselfat 7 months. I used it daily for 5 1/2 months and built up not only enough to get her through each day but had a stock of an extra 5 months in the freezer so she had a year of breastmilk. Too bad I gave mine awy and have to buy another. I LOVED IT!

bouncy seat. Madyson lived in this for feedings(solids) and so that I could shower and get ready for work

maya wrap. I would never have made it through a day with my high-needs infant withoiut my Maya. I still have it and if I was able to lift during this pregnancy, I would stil be slinging her at 34lbs and 4 years old. She misses it like crazy, as do I.

exersaucer. as she got older(mybe 4 months or so) she loved this. There were times my arms just gave out from her constant jumping so this piece of equipment was for the later months but used probably as much as the maya. She would jump for hours. Never really played with the toys but the bouncing and spinning in it were her thing!

The bad(we should have given this stuff away because it was seldom used!)inlcuded:

the changing pad for the changing table: I think I maybe changed her a handful of times on this. It was always the couch, the bed, the floor(once I could get around easier!) What a waste and with the matchig covers in case it got dirty???? UGH!

the crib. again, never used. good thing it changed into a toddler bed so we got maybe a month of nights out of it!!!!

cradle. hmmmm, I believe it held the toys!

boppy. Honestly I woud have loved to have said that we loved it and used it but we loved to nurse lying down in bed. She used the boppy ONCE. I got too lazy to keep taking it out.

High chair. didn't use until she was maybe 11months and then she only used it a few times until we got a booster seat for the table.

mittens to keep baby from scratching face. cant' remember EVER using these things.

Pack n play. still have it for this next one but I doubt I will use it. the only one that got ANY use out of it was a 2 year old little girl I babysat and she took her nap in it. Madyson NEVER used it once.

stroller. she hated it until she was maybe about 2 and then she started liking walks in the stroller at night before bed.

wipes warmer. didn't even own one. I used disposable wipes at first and warmed them in my hands and then used cloth and ran under warm water. Seems a waste.

swing. waste of space and money. She used it maybe 5-10 times in the very beginning so I could poo without a nursing infant and it worked only semi-decent. she didn't really like it. not buying one this time.

Can't think of anything else right now. There wasn't too much that we actually used and even less than my hubby and I will buy this time. Pretty much we are buying clothing, diapers(cloth), and a car seat. We already have the maya wrap and the breasts so this kid is covered!!!!

Must Haves:

At least one sling
Tons of Baby gowns - love those things especially with CDing because they fit over them so well :LOL
This soft mesh pillow type thing for bathing - totally rocked, kept the slippery baby in one spot and super comfy
Snug-tuck pillow or similar for co-sleeping
Vibrating chair thing - the only way I could take a shower
Baby gates (don't need them for awhile if you don't have dogs but if you do have them - and we do - they are totally needed!!!)
Rocking chair or glider
Lanisoh or similar for nipple pain
Comfy nursing bras
Lounging pants!!!
Ice cube trays and plastic storage bags with writing space for making and storing your own baby food
A food processor for making baby food
I really liked my infant car seat and a must have is the cover thing that zips over the top if you live where it will be cold (we do) - it kills the need for a heavy coat, baby could be carried in and out of the house (or wherever we were going) without getting cold.
Changing pads for the changing table - instead of having to clean the whole cover, having a couple pads to use in case one gets dirty was real nice. Also larger ones to put under baby on the bed in case of leaks.

Could Totally Do Without:

Bassinet - mine held clothes most of the time. I think DS slept in it once... for five minutes. :LOL
Crib - same as above
Boppy - I know some people love them, mine was great for the first couple weeks and then proved worthless so I think it's a waste - JMO
Porta-crib - literally never used it once
Playpen - stored toys but that's about it
