Have any good alt.country suggestions??

Ooooo, this is embarassing- since I don't know much about this style of music I will probably use some incorrect terms, misspell a few things, etc. please be gentle with me......my partner LOVES alt.country. we're not talking "likes wilco" but more along the lines of "reads every issue of _no depression_, has multiple Ray Wylie Hubbard T-Shirts, etc." he's a generally pretty hip urban guy from Texas who's been really stressed at work lately and i'd love to get him some new music. only i have NO IDEA where to start....

anyone like this style of music?? can you recommend something new or a classic album?? i would be so, so grateful for any help or suggestions

peace

He might already have this, but "Iron and Wine" is unbelievably amazing. That is the band name for a guy named Sam Beam. He has a few albums out and they are all astoundingly beautiful - especially "The Creek that Drank the Cradle". It's sort of low-fi alt-country. By the way, his songs make perfect lullabyes for babies. My daughter always went to sleep within a few minutes when I put it on at bedtime.

Ooo, oo, ooo! I just saw these guys at a festival and they are sooooo great!

Adrienne Young and Little Sadie

I keep meaning to post a rave about them here because their big thing is promoting sustainable agriculture and CSAs but they are also just excellent musicians.

Check out www.jolieholland.com
She's from texas/louisiana, now based in SF, has an incredible voice and has an interesting twist on the country style. (Plus my good buddie plays in her band )

Lucinda Williams (Car Wheels on a Gravel Road or Sweet Old World) and anything by Gillian Welch (Revival and Hell Among the Yearlings). Steve Earl and Emylou Harris are big ones. Whiskytown is really good. That's a start anyway.

Enjoy!

Kelly Willis
Steve Earl
Jayhawks
Old 97s
Richard Buckner

If he is a huge fan, most of these may not be new to him.

Here is a link to bands that have played Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas. Lots of great music. Great place for Texas alt/country on the River. Super cool place to go. He can get a lot of good band info. from this link that he might like:

A lot of good alt/country play here, too. Check out the link and there are so many good bands on thispage to get some ideas:

Why don't you sneak a peek at his No Depression issues? No Depression has reviews as well as advertisements for new and re-releases so you might get a good idea from there. Does he like Gram Parsons? Most people that like "alternative country", especially those serious enough to read every issue of No Depression, likely would want a Gram Parsons c.d. I'm biased but here is a good one ...

This link below has a short explanation of who Gram Parsons was ....(sadly, now deceased)

(I read No Depression too! But not every issue!)

Oh yeah, a new alt.country group that's worth looking into: The Handsome Family
