I have already purchased Hypnobirthing by Mongan (at least I think that's her name) and I'm considering taking a class. I have read through the book and, for the most part, I like it but I'm unsure if I really "get it", hence the class.
Chapter 2 of the book is about the history of pain in childbirth. A gross generalization of chapter 2 is that everyone was happy and free of pain in childbirth when we were worshipping oak trees and dancing around bonfires, then the big, bad Catholic church came in, killed the tribal medicine women, and scared the crap out of women so they would feel pain in childbirth (did I mention that I was exaggerating too?).
While I do acknowledge that there are tiny kernels of truth in this (the Bible says that pain in childbirth is women's curse from Eve), I found this chapter to be really offensive. I think the point she was trying to get at is that in other cultures (some of which happen to not be Christian), childbirth is not the giant medical "production" it is here and women do not experience as much pain.
I don't want to pay money for a hypnobirthing class only to feel attacked for my religious beliefs. So if you have taken the class, do you remember if there are parts that a practicing Christian/Catholic would find offensive? And, while you're at it, did you find the class to be worthwhile?
Thanks so much.
