Getting rid of animal odors

Help!! We have been in the process of fixing up our spare bedroom for my oldest. We had an old beagle that until he passed away, frequently went to the bathroom on the rug in the room. We ripped out the rug, have freshly painted the entire roon and scoured it top to bottom.

I still cannot get rid of the doggy smell. I have tried EVERYTHING. Please tell me of something that works.. I know we are probably going to have to resand the floors and polyuethorane the floor, but that is not in the budget right now. Any ideas of non toxic ways to get rid of this smell?? Thanks, mamas.

Did you use vinegar when you were cleaning the floor? That will 99% of the time kill animal smells. HTH

I use vinegar straight on the urine spots, it does work best on fresh spots tho. Let it dry on the spot/s

What is the floor surface? The best thing I can suggest if it is a wooden subfloor is to thoroughly clean and then use Nature's Miracle, an enzyme cleaner. You can get it at any large pet store. It comes in a white plastic container with red lettering. Use it per directions.

If that does not work.....you need to seal the floor with some sort of vapor barrier paint. I used a product called BIN on the subfloor where a cat was peeing (previous owers of the house). It is a white pigmented shellac that will seal from smoke damage. It worked on the cat pee just great!

Of course, this was a subfloor under carpeting. I don't know what to tell you if this was on hard wood floors.

The only thing that will remove the odor is enzyme. You need an enzyme that will eat the protein in the urine. Even then it will only be removed for human noses, any other animals will still be able to smell it.

You have to TOTALLY saturate the area with enzyme and then I find after it dries several vacuumings with baking soda does the trick. I had a weenie dog who had some bladder issues.

Good luck. Dog urine is one of the hardest smells to remove. It seeps through the carpet and padding and down into the wood of the floor.

Try some vinegar with tea tree oil. That should help! It worked every time my old kitty went on the rug.
