Ready and jumping the gun a bit but I finished the book a week or so agao. Isn't 8/1 here yet in Hawaii - only a few more hours left of July...but hey, what's a few hours between reading buddies :-))
What did you all think? I have a mixed review...I think the book was well written, had amazing discription, should offer a lot for discussion, but just isn't my type of book...so I'm interested to see what folks are thinking about it. I'll check in tomorrow to see what you all think - happy reading!

A+, Konamama!

I’ve actually read ‘most’ of it a while back but I really wanted to give it another try – doesn’t he even say that the book needs to be read twice? Also, I have some friends how LOVE the book but had to read some other similar authors first (can’t remember who).

I’m going to read it again for this discussion but I will say that I feel (after a friend helped me understand better) that I was trying to hard to separate all the characters – so many with similar names! My friend said that they’re supposed to run together, which is a big relief to my mommy brain, LOL.

I do remember blood in the streets as a moving image…It’s been a while, thought.

I've read it 4 times, most recently @ 4 months ago. For some reason I liked it better when I was younger....It epitomizes Magical Realism, though there are other Magical Realism books I like much better. Hope you enjoy it!

I agree, it isn't about character develoment really, it is more theme/image oriented, which is pretty and you can almost taste it, but just not my normal style of book. my SIL was here for a visit while I was reading it and she said that most folks either really like it (one of my friends liked it so much that she even bought the Spanish version for her book collection) or the don't at all (like my SIL who reads like a crazy womyn). interesting...

I just received it from the library. Will check in as soon as I read it.

I haven't read this but I have read many of his short stories. Marquez likes to show how the imagination is only available to those who love. He displays decadence through those LOooooooong sentences. I think I'll get this book to discuss. I love his stuff. at first glance it isn't that interesting, but when you think about it more, the themes are powerful.
