Using seeds from inside squash

Thread Starter
Tonight we are having speghetti squash for dinner that I bought at the supermarket.

I am wondering if I planted the seeds if anything would happen.

Would they sprout and produce a plant bearing squash? Or should I dry them for next year? Or should I just buy seeds and pitch these?

Thanks,
Stephanie

Hello there,

I would definately keep the seeds. I would dry them on a paper towel and save them to plant next season. Keep in mind the original squash might be a hybrid. Have a ball.

I say go for it! we have grown lots of things from market produce. One or two by accident on the compost pile even!
My mother is growing purple potatoes from the ones she got at the store to eat. the "seed" potatoes actually cost more for some reason........and she wouldn't have had any to eat.

Hi Guys--

I have pumpkin plants all over my garden because I tossed the jack-o-lanterns (which had some seeds left in them) in the compost pile and then spread the compost all over the beds. I don't have the heart to destroy them, and so I have pumpkin vines along the walkway, and in the rose beds. Oh well, should be fun. Maybe if you throw it out and forget about it, you'll get seredipendy (sp?) plants.

Try my picturetrails deal if you want to see my garden (shameless, shameless plug)

Using seeds from inside squash

Like other folks, we have had great luck harvesting pumpkins every year from last years pumpkin.

Last year I also started saving seeds from health-food store bought delicata and acorn squash. Not sure what happened to my delicata plants, but we several very healthy bush acorn squash right now.

Personally I prefer to buy something somewhat organic and local since then I know it is well-suited to my region.
