target won't do nursing pictures!

I just called the lady at Target portrait studio today (I know her really well and she knows us too so she's a sweetheart) anyway, I asked her if she could do a nursing pic with Vincent, she said they had received a new policy regarding nursing, and she read it to me. it was something along the lines of "we cannot accept any requests for pictures showing any amount of breast or other genitalia, including pregnant and nursing women".

how annoying! I guess I'm going to have to hire a private photographer, it sucks though, the photographer at target is great and she knows us really well so knows our good angles and everything.

very sad!

Excuse me!

Someone needs some basic anatomy lessons. Breasts are NOT genitals, naver have been, never will be. They may or may not be considered "private", but they are NOT genitalia.:

I know! this is why I put the little smilie when I said that! I even told her "breasts are not genitalia" but she said "well, you know what they mean, it's the idea that counts"

whatever!

I know! I'm pissed too! JCPenney has a policy aginst it too. I don't want to pay outragous prices for a photographer either! I called around all of the photographers listed in my phone book and only 2 of them said they had no problem taking nurseing pics! One of the two wanted $280 and the other wanted $150 minimum. Rediculous! StudioOne even said... "umm, no mam, I don't think you would want to take any bf pictures here. We have a window open in our studio where people could look in ( ) Maybe we could do another pose where you are covered up, just in the same position where it looks like you could be nurseing." I said no, I want to nurse my baby in the picture. She said "let me ask my manager if we can do that" He said no.
It's just crazy. That should be illegal to make a policy aginst bf. It is perfectly legal and not indecent to nip. Why can't we take a picture of it. The state I live in (Texas) has specificaly made a legislation protecting a womans right to bf in public. Why do we let them get away with making policys aginst it?

It was also in TX that not long ago a family were brought up on charges (later dismissed) and had their kids taken away for a snapshot photo of the mom bf'ing her baby (under 2). The pervs at the photo development place determined that this was "child porn", partly because another photo on the roll was of the married couple lying in bed naked w/ the covers up to their armpits.

I remember that.

I've taken some nursing shots (not of me, i was the one shooting). They turned out really nice and the mom loved them.

They can be done. I totally recommend it. I'm sure you can eventually find someone to do it.

loving-my-babies: why don't you ask that photog. at target to come to your house? I'm sure you could pay her a bit more then Target does for her time.

katt- are they allowed to do that? I was afraid of asking her to do that!

l-m-b -

She may or may not have a non-compete arrangement with Target, but if they will not let her take a nursing picture of you at their store, surely they can't get too mad if she does it at your home, kwim?

Plus, would they ever find out?

So does every woman who gets her photo taken there have to wear a turtleneck?

Can you find an independent photographer in your area? Dh and I had some preg. photos done which we love. The photographer was great and she had no problem with an "amount of breast".

PS. You can see some of the photos here if you want!

(we are the first couple on the left, top row; I am in the 3rd and 4th photos on the top row; and the middle photo on the bottom row is ours as well. The 2nd couple on the top row is my bf and her partner).

no harm in asking. even if she signed some sort of non-compete contract (which I doubt because I never had to sign something like that when i worked for Picture People) she wouldn't be competeing as she would be providing a service that Target doesn't. No worries.

i think it's elitest- many women are on a budget & get their family's portraits done at sears, target, walmart et al because they cannot afford anything else. ginny nosesniff can go to the fancy-shmancy studio & do you think they are going to say 'boo' about a nursing photo? hell, those poor women don't nurse anyway, they just eat twinkies & watch soap operas all day after getting their formula at wic. man, i hate this attitude.

mama2xander- those pics are SO cute! 's

I want something artistic, of ds nursing, but ofcourse I do wanna show some breast! I want to remember what nursing felt like and looked like when I'm old and wrinkled and can't remember a thing!

I'm going to contact a private photographer today, and hire him to come to my home and do a session. I can't wait!

Thanks! We were thrilled with them. I agree that private photographers are often super expensive but this woman we found was just starting out on her own and her prices were great. It was so much fun too.

if you don't mind me asking... how expensive?

She charged $50 for the sitting fee and $50 per roll of 36 pics (we did 2 rolls). With each roll you get a set of black and white and a set of colour pics. It was $10 more to have the photos put on a CD as well. She also gave us all the negatives, which is practically unheard of for a photographer to do. (These prices are all CDN $). Most of the photographers around here advertising pregnancy photos charged at least $1000 and did not include prints, you had to pay separately for those!!! And they wouldn't give out the negatives either so you had to pay a fortune for reprints from them.

Ask around and see if you can find a fairly new photographer. We did this for our wedding as well and got a great deal in exchange for allowing her to use several of our photos to build up her portfolio. Both of the photographers we used had worked as assistants for other photographers, so they had experience, but were now ready to work on their own. And they were both moms working out of their homes too which was nice

If you can't find anyone like this, maybe try a photography/art school?

With all this talk about nursing pics..I wanna go ahead and do some nursing pics as well..Do you know if Sears does nursing pics? If not..I guess we can experiment some with the Digital Camera huh?!

Here in NS, the law states that a woman can breastfeed anywhere she's legally allowed to be. If I'm legally allowed to be in front of the camera at the studio, then I deduce I could nurse there too! Makes me wanna try just for the challenge!
