How old is too old for a home birth?

I'm hoping for a home birth for my next pregnancy (first child is now 4 mos - I like to plan ahead - lol!!)

I'm 38, and in good health. The only complication of my first pregnancy was pre-term labor at 32 weeks. Brought on by a tremendous amount of job related stress at that time. (no longer employed, or insured either, so a home birth would help in that way, too)

I knew NOTHING going into my first birth at the hospital, I actually didn't realize how bad it was until I started getting involved in online groups like this, and reading how wonderful giving birth can be:-)

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Providing we can concieve again, am I too old to attempt a home birth? Also, we live down the street from the hospital, literally a rocks throw away...

Thanks,
Tracy

I personally knew 2 women, one 39 and one 40, who both gave birth at home with no complications. I think it probably depends on the midwife, some would be comfortable with it and some might not.
I would definitely find a midwife who would work with you because homebirth is an incredible, wonderful, empowering thing. It is far better than a hospital birth, IMHO. I have done both and my 2 homebirths were so much easier and more relaxed. I am now PG with my 4th and I am planning another homebirth.
I would think that w/a normal pregnancy and a caring midwife you can birth at home.

I wish you the very best when the time comes.

Hi,
If you are in Mass. I bet Nancy Wainer would attend to you, she is a great Midwife. Otherwise she could probably recommend someone. She is in Needham, Ma.
Good luck and have fun with your first one!

I would say anything over anhour old. . .

Oh for you (Just kidding)

You are by no means old. Good grief. Have your baby at home if you want. I see no reason why you couldn't any more than any of us. Even the preterm thing isn't anything to worry about. My first one was 6 weeks early and my second a home birth was 2 weeks late. Knock your self out. Have a good time. Enjoy your homebirth

I had the privilege of attending a birth for a first time mom who was 43 when her little one was born. She (both of them actually) was fantastic!!!

Go for it! Take excellent care of yourself, find an attendant you love and trust your body.

love,
Christina
