Toxic Plastic - Page 7

For those looking for glass bottles and silicon nipples. http://www.radiantlifecatalog.com/pr.../ct/4/pid/1267

I read the first 2 pages and I wanted to thank everyone for their input. I really didn't want to read this thread because, it reminded me of when a friend of mine freaked out when she learned that I was still using plastic for dh's lunches. At the time I thought she was crazy, I figured it was better to use plastic than for dh to go out for lunch. Oh well, now I think we are ready to look into other alternatives.

We have gotten rid of almost all the plastic in our house. We are working on more glass storage containers right now. Tonight i am going to speak with the GM of johnny carinos to see if he has any glass containers we could have. I love this thread because i am learning so much more and it keeps me thinking about how much plastic we used to have in our lives. But at the same time reading all of this makes me even more paranoid. Thanks for the wealth of info on this ladies.

I think really when it comes down to it...use number 1's only once. Number 2, 4, and 5's use only with cold storage if you are going to use plastic and only reuse plastics that are sold for that purpose, don't reuse empty food containers.
Thanks for the link, Sherra. I'm going to assume #5's are okay until I hear otherwise.

anyone know about melamine?

Wow! Ok so I'm officially overwhelmed now after reading all of those posts!

www.vermontcountrystore.com has metal ice cube trays but i think they are aluminum. why is aluminum bad????

I use Pyrex to store my food in but guess what # the lids are? They are #1 which I hear isn't supposed to be reused. So do I just put wax paper like someone said between lid and food? Isn't that a waste of a lot of paper and bad for the environment?

Can I recycle glass spice bottles with the metal lids to store baby food in - in the fridge?

Sounded like someone was saying to use the silicone muffin tins to freeze baby food in. Good idea!! Silicone is ok isn't it??

You want to hear something that is soooo screwed up? I buy YoBaby ORGANIC yogurt for dd thinking I am feeding her great stuff right because no antibiotics, hormones etc....guess what plastic it is housed in? #6...one of the WORST! OMG! So I buy food that is healthy and yet the packaging leeches chemicals into her body thru the "healthy" food.

I think it only leeches when its reused.....washed in a dishwasher....etc

I didnt think it leeched when it was new......or am I wrong with that assumption?

wow.

totally not surprised...sorry :

imo...if it leaches, it leaches. and the more you reuse the more it leaches.

I've been trying to stay away from yobaby anyway. Each small container has almost as much sugar as half a can of soda, and stonyfield is owned by a conglomerate. The fact that they use #6's just shows me that they really are just interested in cutting corners.

I believe number 6's are bad all around. I don't know the details on who owns the yo baby organics yogurt but I've been hearing that dole and a few other big brand names have been trying to buy up "organic" like smaller products. So it wouldn't suprise me if they bought something up and then cut corners .
