Do I have to use Synthrapol??

I bought some from Dharma and actually used it for my first batch. I read the directions quickly and washed and rinsed etc. Upon reading the bottle more carefully I saw that it is really toxic. The bottle says to wear goggles and a face mask! YIKES!! I didnt when I used it, I just tossed some in carefully into the wash. Then washed my hands.
Does it really make that big of a difference, or can I get away without using it?

nak
i never do, though the fabric will pick up the dyes unevenly if there are spot of grease, etc in the fabric. i'm never going for perfect, so this doesn't bug me. if it ever is important i'd use it with the mask & gloves in a well ventilated area.

good luck!

O.K. it is not "really toxic". It is an industrial detergent, not something you would want to use in a bath but o.k. to come in contact with. If you have anything else from Dharma that has a Dharma label on it, you will see the same warning on all of them. This is a coverall that they are required to put on their packages b/c of state law. If you have Dharma's catalog, there is a section near the front about these labels/warnings.

If you don't use it you might get splotching form other colors(if you have a multi colored item). It will also take alot more rinsing bc the synthaprol keeps the dye from reseetling on the fabric during the wash.

If you handwash anything with synthrapol, do wear some gloves because it can irritate your skin and strips ALL the natural oils out which is awfully uncomfortable! It rinses very clean, just do a second rise to be sure it's all out. I always use it when dyeing anything an intense color that may bleed back.
