Has anyone seen Monster? - Page 2

Oh, and another thing: Aileen's mother thinks that Aileen's troubles were due to the fact that she was a breech birth.

I bet the ACOG would love to hear that! "Vaginal breech birth produces serial killers!"

It's definitely one of those movies you don't forget. Charlize does an exceptional job at shedding her image and becoming Aileen. But that's a big part of what makes it so overwhelming. Her weight gain for the part, as well as the intensity of the story, couple together to create a really memorable, slightly disturbing movie.

Dh says it was a good movie, but freaky.

I thought this was a very good movie. Awfully sad & depressing at times, though. I'd like to read more about Aileen (and maybe find that DVD you're talking about Greaseball). It's a shame her whole life had been full of violence. If I remember correctly, she was raped several times at a very young age (8 maybe?)...how sad.

Yes, her entire life had been full of abuse and she started prostituting at age 9. Her mother left her when she was a baby, and her father committed suicide in prison; he was also a sex offender. She was raised by a grandfather who severely beat her. She had a baby when she was 13 by the local pedophile. After the birth she became the local "untouchable" and was kicked out of her home. She lived in the woods, and then became a hitchhiking prostitute later in her teens.

I don't understand how someone can live a life of misery like that and not have anyone step in and try to help. She stayed at a maternity home for the duration of her pregnancy. How could they not suspect that a pregnant 13-year-old was being raped?

I couldn't watch the whole thing. It was so sad. I thought it was really amazing--Theron and Ricci were excellent. I haven't stopped thinking about the scene in the lawyers office. It was brillant. She just wanted to be loved and it was tearing me up the way Ricci didn't really love her but just wanted someone to pay the bills and buy her stuff. I knew it was a true story and I knew it wasn't going to end well and I couldn't stand to watch it anymore. It was just too upsetting...
