Quick Dyeing Question...

Do you have to unravel the skien of wool before dyeing, or can you dye it the way it comes?

I ask becasue I really dont want to go through the hassle of unwinding, dyeing, drying, and then winding the skien back up again. If I can save time by skipping all the winding, Id be so happy, but dont want to waste 8oz of wool trying.

I wouldn't think you would necessarily have to unwind it. However, not unwinding might cause some uneven dyeing that might make the yarn look varigated. But if you manipulated the skein at various points during the dye process, that might eliminate any uneven dyeing.

Anybody else?

I personally, will always unwind, dye and re-wind. The reasoning is that I want specific colors even though I do verigated. If you don't unwind, you may end up with the center being all natural and color on the outside. I've found that when I've tied the loops too tightly that I can miss dyeing that area in the center. Also, 8oz is a lot to put into your microwave (if that's how you are doing it). I've done it, but it's a lot of yarn..it's like 465yds of yarn (for Fisherman's).

All that being said. It's up to you! If you are wanting natural in there, go for it. If you do dye it like that, I would suggest squirting dye into the center area with a turkey baster, eye dropper, medicine squirter thingy, etc to get some color in the middle..

I hope this helps!

tammy
