I made mocs!!

I wasn't sure I could do it, but I wanted more shoes for my dd and don't have the $$ to buy them. I went to the thrift store and bought a coat for $10 that had four colors of suede on it. I think I can get at least a pair out of each color. I already did the red and they turned out pretty good! I copied a robeez as best I could without taking it apart. I put two layers in the sole and two layers on the top part. If they don't last, it's no big deal. I only have a pattern for a size 18-24M or so but if anybody wants me to send the the pattern pieces, I'd be happy to. This was pretty easy although I'd recommend trying it with scrap fleece or something first to get the hang of it and the leather won't pin, so you have to just old it in place while you sew. The leather is super smooth to cut.. kind of nice and I just used a regular needle although I think a jeans needle might work better. I don't have a walking foot but think that might help also to keep stitche even. But, for $10 for 4-5 pairs of shoes, I'm pretty happy . I didn't do anything pretty on these, but might try some embroidery on the next pair if my embroidery machine will work with leather. Anyway.. here's a picture.. which is brighter red than the shoes really are, but gives you an idea anyway. I'm kinda proud of them

Oh.. one more thing.. you might think an old lady pruse from the thrift shop would be a good source for the leather, but it takes more than you think and a purse would only make one shoe.. maybe. You are much better off getting a coat or long skirt.

Wow, those turned out great! I have some suede in a box somewhere, I ought to dig it out and give it a try! Only thing is, I don't have any other soft shoes to model from... could you take a pic of how you make them, when you make your next pair?

I'll try to to remember to take some pictures. It's not hard and if your little one can wear a size 18-24M shoe (a foot that is like 5.25 inches long or so I think?? I'll send you some cut out paper pattern pieces if you give me your address. It's a simple pattern.. just a little fussy to sew with all the curves

www.newconceptions.com has a free booties pattern. It's about the same concept. You'd just have to enlarge it.

very nice. Perhaps you could scan the pattern and email it.

CUTE!!!

With the suede, are the seam allowances bulky on the inside? How about where the elastic is? I have that New Conceptions pattern bookmarked.... been meaning to try it..... (it's right next there next to my Honeyboy patterns )

Awesome job! Send me the pattern please!

Just wanted to add that if you can find a leather supply store, they sell needles specifically made for hand-sewig leather. They kind of cut the leather rather than piercing it... Alternately, I also found a really thin beading needle was better than a regular sized one...
