To everyone who pmed me requesting pattern pieces.. I'll definitly send them to you when I get them all cut. I had quite a few requests, so be a little patient with me
As for taking pictures during the making, I started, but it's very time consuming and putting together a web page explaining the pictures is too and I needed the blue mocs for an outfit, so I stopped. If I find a few free hours, I'll sill do it, but until then, here's a few words describing how I do it.
Cut 4 sole pieces (make sure you have a right and a left foot.. you can tell from the pattern) (I'm using a light suede, so if you use something heavier, you might be able to get away with one piece on the sole)
Cut 4 toe pieces
Cut 2 heel pieces
Cut 2 elastic casing pieces
You'll need 1/4 inch elastic also
Step 1 - The first thing I do is use a glue stick to stick my sole pieces together so they don't slip while sewing. it's optional of course
Step 2 - put right sides of toe peices together and stitch along the top (the part that goes near the ankle) with about a 1/4 inch seam allowance, then turn right sides out and topstitch. (if you want embelishments, put them on before this step so they are only on one piece of leather)
Step 3- stitch elastic casing piece across the top of the heal piece along the top of the casing piece and along the bottom. It looks MUCH nicer if after you stitch along the top, you clean up the very top edge with a stright edge and rotary cutter but you don't HAVE to. You want to stitch very near the upper and lower edge of the casing piece and be sure to backstitch when you start the stitching and stop the stitching because this area gets a lot of stress
Step 4 - right sides together, stitch the toe piece to the sole piece..the toe piece is wider so it makes a nice curved opening when you are done and doesn't lie flat against the sole. I use about a 1/4 inch seam allowance, but you might want to use a bigger one (remember to cut the leather for a larger seam allowance too) and then just trim with scissors the extra
Step 5 - stitch on the heel piece over the heel of the sole (remember to put the casing "right" side toward the inside) and overlap the edges of the toe piece.
Step 6 - trim seams and clip curves if need be (diagonal cuts so the seams lay better especailly at the toe) and turn shoe right side out.
Step 7 - look inside the shoe and near the center of the toe piece by the ankle, you should see where the elastic casing meets the toe piece. You'll want to cut a slit through the inside layer of leather only in two places to lace elastic through that piece of leather. Thread some 1/4 inch ealstic through the casing and through the slits.. gather elastic as much or as little as needed and stitch elastic together.
You're done!
I use a sewing machine.. I put in a fresh sharps needle size 14 and it seemed to do just fine. For thread, I just use polyester and so far so good. Don't worry abou tthe inside stitching being messy.. you'll never see it. I find the suede to have very soft seam alloances.. softer than the robeeze that we're use to. So far we have red and blue shoes with green and brown to come. These are SO fun and I'm so impressed with how well they've come out. They take me about an hour to make.. maybe I'll get faster.. but if not, that's okay too.
Sorry no sewing pictures but these directions will make much more sense when you get the pattern.
Hand sewing them might be a fun project that you could easily carry in a purse. I almost didn't turn and topstitch a pair and put a blanket stitch with some ebroidery yard along the edges instead, but I was afraid it would wear too quickly.
My dd will have more little leather slip on shoes than any child ever needs pretty soon *L*.. every time I see a new color I'm going to want it! That coat I found with the four colors was such a good buy!
Anyay.. off to cut a bazillion patterns to mail out
