Favorite Hymn

Ok so mine is a Primary song, but I still love it and it was sang out my baptism, as was my next listed favorite...

"Teach Me to Walk"

Teach me to walk in the light of His love,
Teach me to pray to my Father above.

Teach me to know of the things the are right,

(UGH! can't remember the rest!

And also "How Great Thou Art"

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

This is a hard one
Number one hymn is easy....

Trust and Obey

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His word
What a glory He sheds on our way
When we do His good will
He abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obey

(refrain)
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
to be happy in Jesus, than to trust and obey.

I sort of categorize -- the rest of my favorites.

A Mighty Fortress
I am very much moved and challenged by the line "Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also"

Here I am Lord
Which has the beautiful refrain:
Here I am Lord, is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
i will go Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

Come, Ye Thankful People Come
My favorite verse is number 4 -- still
I always wonder if people singing that hymn realize they are asking God to bring about the Second Coming (I think most are thinking about Thanksgiving turkey )
Even so Lord, quickly come
To Thy final harvest home;
Gather Thou Thy people in,
Free from sorrow, free from sin;
There forever purified,
In Thy presence to abide;
Come, with all Thine angels, come,
Raise the glorious harvest home.

I better stop now ---

My father, who was a minister, and had an awesome tenor voice, used to sing "How Great Thou Art" and it made my hair stand up, it was so beautiful.

But my favorite is It is Well with My Soul. The man who wrote it, wrote it after losing his entire family at sea. I'll look for the lyrics & post after dd is napping.

My dad chose to have it sung at my mother's funeral.

I like "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken"--because they remind me of my grandmother.

Mine is How Great Thou Art and Because He Lives.

(1) God sent His Son,

they called Him Jesus,

He came to love,

heal, and forgive;

He lived and died

to buy my pardon,

An empty grave is there to prove

my Savior lives.

Chorus:

Because He lives I can face tomorrow,

Because He lives All fear is gone;

because I know

He holds the future.

And life is worth the living just

because He lives.

(2) How sweet to hold

a newborn baby,

And feel the pride,

and joy He gives;

but greater still

the calm assurance,

This child can face uncertain days

because He lives.

(3) And then one day

I'll cross the river,

I'll fight life's final war with pain;

And then as death gives way to victory,

I'll see the lights of glory and

I'll know he lives.

My favourite is On Eagle's Wings, but I don't know the words!! I like How Great Thou Art, as long as it is sung properly. I heard it butchered a few too many times!

I also love Contemporary Christian music so upbeat.

I like:

Holy Holy Holy

I could sing of your praise forever

Shine Jesus Shine

Shout to the Lord (LOVE THIS SONG!)

Open the Eyes of my heart Lord

There is one more by Darlene Zschech, but I can't remember the title

Gosh haven't listened to these songs in forever, I'll have to get out my homemade CD's and take a listen

I love the group delirious?

**editted to add the song, Giver of Life, and Lord I lift your name on high

DiaperDiva, Just sang Teach Me to Walk in the Light for bedtime (we try to do restful children songs/hymns to have that peaceful restful spirit).

My faves are How Great Thou Art, All Creatures of Our God and King:

All creatures of our God and King,
Lift up your voice and with us sing,
Alleluia!
Thou rising sun with golden beam,
Thou silver moon with softer gleam,
Alleluia (several times)
O praise him Alleluia!

There are a few verses that are great but can't remember them all!

My third favorite is an LDS hymn:

O My Father, thou that dwellest
In a high and glorious place;
When shall I regain thy presence
And again behold thy face?
In thy holy habitation, did my spirit once reside?
In my first primeval childhood was I nurtured near thy side?

For a wise and glorious purpose
Thou hast sent me here to earth.
But withheld the recollection of my former friends and birth.
Yet ofttimes a secret something whispers, "you're a stranger here."
And I felt that I had wandered from a more exalted sphere.

I had learned to call thee father
In thy holy courts on high.
But until the key of knowledge was restored, I knew not why.
In the heavens are parents single?
No, the thought makes reason stare!
Truth is reason, truth eternal tells me I've a Mother there.

When I leave this frail existence, when I lay this mortal by,
Father, Mother, may I greet you
In your royal courts on high.
Then at length, when I've completed
All you sent me forth to do,
with your mutual approbation
Let me come and dwell with you.

(As a child this single hymn more than any other really built my vocabulary!).

Irishmommy -

"On Eagles Wings" is Psalm 91.
I love that one too and dh and I chose that scripture as the blessing scripture for each of our dd's baptisms! Instead of reading it - I was the cantor and we sang the Psalm (like ti should be sung!) using the "Eagles Wings" version.

Hey moms! I just got back from vacation and saw this great thread. I have loved reading through all your favorite hymns. There are so many wonderful hymns that it is hard to pick a favorite, but currently I have
"Just As I Am, Without One Plea"
"What A Friend We Have in Jesus"
"For All the Saints,"
"How Firm a Foundation," and
"Rock of Ages" stuck in my head.

Bekka, your comment about that one hymn building your vocabulary was really thought-provoking. What a useful tool a simple hymnbook could be! You could teach your child theology, history, vocabulary, grammar, literary devices, and music theory wth nothing but a good old fashioned hymnal.

Aaah! My heart is singing, overflowing with joy! Reading through this thread has been so wonderful! Fortunately, noone is around cause I have been makin a joyful noise!! These songs brought back so many memories for me; thank you!
Some of my favorites are "Precious Lord, Take my Hand", "The Sparrow" and "This Little Light of Mine", and of course "Amazing Grace" I could go on forever!

If a church would start up where all the congregation did was sing hymns, I would start attending church....

There are so many great hymns to choose from but I believe my two favorites are "Great is Thy Faithfulness" and "It is Well With My Soul." I can't hear either of these hymns without tearing up.

Classic UU hymn, "Spirit of Life"

Spirit of life, come unto me
Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion
Blow in the wind
Rise in the sea
Move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice
Roots hold me close
Wings set me free
Spirit of life,
Come to me, come to me

Be Thou My Vision

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart: naught be all esle to me, save that Thou art - Thou my best thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word: I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son (child?) Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Riches I heed not nor man's empty praise, Thoug my inheritance, now and always: Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won, May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heav'n's Sun! Heart of my own heart, what ever befall, Still be my Vision O Ruler of all.

Be Still My Soul

Be still my soul, the Lord is on thy side.
With patience bear thy cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide.
Through every change, he faithful will remain.
Be still my soul, thy best, thy Heavenly Freind
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still my soul, thy God doth undertake
to guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake.
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still my soul, the waves and winds still know
His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still my soul, the hour is hastening on
when we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still my soul, when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

These words have brought me much comfort for many years!

Another family favorite is Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Come Thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace.
Streams of mercy never ceasing call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it, mount of Thy redeeming love.

Here I raise my Ebeneezer, hither by thy help I'm come,
and I hope by Thy good pleasure safely to arrive at home.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love.
Here's my heart, o take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above.

Jesus sought me when a stranger wandring from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love.
Here's my heart, o take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

O to grace, how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be.
Let Thy goodness like a fetter bind my wandring heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love.
Here's my heart, o take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

I too love to sing hymns to my babies. It is soothing for them and healing for me.

How Great Thou Art--Dh who is not much of a churchgoer ws totally moved by this one at my grandpa's funeral.

Amazing Grace--the power of simplicity

Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee--mainly because it reminds me of the majesty of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony

And I'm into old time gospel stuff, like I'll Fly Away.

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home

I looked over Jordan and what did I see
Comin' for to carry me home
A band of angels comin' after me
Comin' for to carry me home

Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home

If you get to heaven before I do
Comin' for to carry me home
Tell all my friends I'm comin' there too
Comin' for to carry me home

Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home

I'm sometimes up and sometimes down
Comin' for to carry me home
But still I know I'm heavenly (freedom) bound
Comin' for to carry me home

Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home

If I get there before you do
Comin' for to carry me home
I'll cut a hole and pull you through
Comin' for to carry me home

Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home
