so i was just reading in a post that vit c gives you a tummy ache and diareah!! We just started taking a chewable supplement and have all had diareah and tummy aches. we will stop right now!!! what should we do instead? i was wanting us all to take it to boost our immune systems.

Can you take smaller doses? The diarrhea is only supposed to happen when you get too much vitamin C. Another possibility could be that the particular form of vit C you are taking is too harsh on your tummies.
Maybe you get enough vit C in your diets already with fruits and veggies?

We actually don't eat too many fruits and veggies (very bad on our part, we are starting to do better) and I can't get ds to eat them at all unless in a smoothy (which we make sometimes every day, but still it's only fruit, no veggies...). Last winter we all got sick TONS (we also had just moved here so new germ base, etc.) and I DO NOT want another winter like that!!!!!
And right now we all have a little cold (in the summer!?!) and my ds#2 always gets sicker than the rest of us (and he does eat veggies) that is the case right now.
I will look for a gentler vit c.

Look for a gentler Vit C and also drink TONS of water. Vit. C is water soluble - so you have to make sure you are drinking a lot of water to get it to process through your system. I have to take 1000mg of vit c every day because I am really prine to bladder infections - and as long as I drink a lot of water I am fine. If I don't then I start getting the acidy tummy.
HTH!

Take calcium at the same time that you take your vit.c. Calcium needs an acidiic environment to be absorbed, and the calcium will act as a buffer to ease the nunmber that vit.c can do on your system. BTW -I also recommend that you use calcium citrate and not calcium carbonate.

I find the vitamin C packets by Alacer (EmergenC) much easier on my system than other crystals or tablets.

Thanks for all your helpful advice! I'm happy to know that I can still take vit. C, but just need to change the way I do it and perhaps the kind I use. Which is a really big bummer because I bought a HUGE thing of this vit C, not knowing that some vit C could cause intestenal problems!!
