Unvaxed baby in childcare

I just joined a gym with on-site childcare that I hope I can utilize. Do I need to worry about other babies/children that might have been recently vaxed?
The illnesses babies are most likely to pick up in a daycare are not things we vax for. Gym child care rooms tend to be different from a regular daycare because it's an even less stable population. Ask what their procedures are- when & how are toys cleaned, is there a sink in the room for handwashing, what are their handwashing policies, do they change diapers, etc.

There is a sink. I saw it. I didn't ask what the hand washing policy is and I didn't ask how or how often they wash the toys. I should have. They do not change diapers but they will give babies bottles. The age range is 6 months to 12 years.

I'm concerned about a child that has just been vaxed and may be shedding the disease. Isn't that sometimes a concern when you go to the doctor's office?

Some vaccines are made with live viruses- mmr & chicken pox. Honestly though, I'd be so much more concerned about the other things passed around on dirty hands & toys.

Hey -
I think I know what gym you're talking about. My guys go there and it has never even been brought up.

Mamaya, It's 24 Hour Fitness in Kaneohe. The only one I could find on this side with on-site child care. Do you go there?

Yep, that's the one. Although, I haven't been going lately. You probably know why

Mamamay, I tried to send you a pm but it said your box was full. Are you not able to exercise at all now? If you ever want to go together, I'd love to.

glad you asked

hi there,
i am glad you asked this question because i was going to post about this myself. my concern really is hib...because everytime you read about factors that make children more vulnerable 'daycare' is one of them. is gym child care the same and do you think that hib for an unvaxed baby is a risk in such a setting? my son is 14 mo. and it weighs on my mind.

thx
k

I think that like a PP said, gym child cares may be more worrisome. The kids are not as closely tracked and they don't ask for records like a regular daycare you would be using while you went to work. The gym child care would be less likely to know if a child has just been vaxed, I would think. My dh has had to get several vaxes recently and he was told either not to be around us or to keep the injection site covered for several days. That's the standard operating procedure whether family members have been vaxed or not.

I guess you'd have to look into whether the hib is a live vax, which I don't think it is. They can only shed the disease from a live vax.

At my gym, they do not allow children that appear sick at all. Even if they have a slight runny nose, and what baby doesn't at some time or another, the child cannot stay. I would hope that parents would have enough sense not to bring their children to the gym right after they've gotten a vax, but you never know.

Yeah, they're really strict about runny noses there. They won't change diapers either.

MarineWife-- did your husband just get smallpox? That is one they worry about exposing small babies to.

I wouldn't worry about shedding in a situation like that unless your child is immunosuppressed.

He got smallpox just before he left. They did that so that none of us would be exposed to it. He also got anthrax and probably some others while he was at TBS. Those were the ones he was told to keep covered. We didn't have the baby then. We were still ttc.

My babe is 7 months old and would be in a childcare environment while at the gym. None of the other issues apply. He is breastfed. His immune system is not comprised as far as I know. Should I still be worried about hib?

T a little, but just wanted to remind you, be ever vigilant! My ridiculous neighbor got her son vaccinated with chicken pox on Friday, had a B-party for him on Sat. and I didn't find out (I was there with my 3mo) until Sun. when she thought he might have contracted it from the vacc. ARRGGHHHH.

Best of luck to keeping your little ones safe!

My dh was in the army for 10yrs. He got out when I told him I was pregnant with #1. DH use to get gamagobulin everytime they were doing paperwork for deployment, it didn't matter that he just had the GG shot 2 wks prior for a deployment that didn't happen. I so wanted him to get the hep A vax to avoid those GGs. They were only being given to the special ops forces at the time. He never told me when he got them, the blood on the back of his boxers was the tell tail sign. He had the smallpox vax as a kid and I believe again when he enlisted. Smallpox was given to soldiers through 1992 if I remember correctly.

Anyway, to a military wife. You deserve it.
