help for the sewing challenged, please!

Thread Starter
I bought my machine about three mos ago and I have only managed to sew one pair of pants -- and they are pretty botched (totally fudged the hole for the drawstring, just didn't get the directions). But of course I bought tons of fabric because of all of my fantasy projects. lol Now I am determined to learn to sew. I am going to start on a new insulin pump next week (juvenile diabetes ) and I need to make clothes with pockets on the inside where I can keep it away from milo. (When I was on the pump before I just kept it in my bra, but that won't do with mr. snacky, lol.) I'm really scared that he is going to fall in love w/ it like he did the cell phone if he sees it, so I really need to get going on this.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get started? I'd take a class if it's necessary, but I have never left milo, even with dad, for more than a half an hour (though it may be time for dad to jump in a little more). I am hoping there's an excellent learn to sew book out there somewhere that I don't know about. I have kwik sew for toddlers, but I think there's a kwik sew learn to sew book, too. Would it be redundant (sp?) or would it help?

My other problem is that my machine was used and didn't come with a manual. So, now I'm stuck with it making a stitch that it's not even supposed to be able to do (looks like one zig zag, then two straight stitches, then one zig zag, etc -- they told me when I bought it that it only did the basic zig zag and straight stitch) when I think I've got it set on zig zag. I have fiddled with everything, which is probably just making it worse. So, if anyone has advice for this problem, I'd be eternally greatful. Also, if anyone has an extra manual around, like from a broken machine or something, I think that might help. Even though it wouldn't go with my machine, it might help me figure things out.

Thanks for any help!

Hi!

If you search online for the type and model number of your machine you should be able to find a manual to buy. Or at least find one that is a copy.

I think that a class would be good! It's hard to figure out what patterns or online directions are saying. So, taking a class would be more hands on and the teacher would actually be able to SHOW you how to do things, instead of looking at pictures. There might be some great online tips with short videos, I know that there are some awesome online videos for knitting, so there are probably sewing ones too.

The easiest thing might be to sew pockets onto your existing clothes.

Good luck!

And if you need any help just post your questions here!

I saw a article on travel clothes once that used pockets that buttoned inside clothing - this way you could sew just one ( or whatever) pocket and add buttons to your clothes.

Sewing is so much easier to learn in person from someone with experience. Most sewers have a million little things they do that they don't even realize, let alone are able to share. And pictures help, but it is just not the same.
