Did you ever read a book you hated because...

Did you ever read a book you hated because someone lent it to you and told you it was great? What a wimp I am, I have been struggling to read this book because a nice mom at dd's playgroup gave me this book and told me it was hilarious. Well, parts of it are funny, but it is not my type of humor at all. I am afraid if I give the book back and she asks me how I liked it and I try to fake it, she will know I didn't really read it. I'm determined to finish this stupid 400 page book, but it makes me mad because I have so many other books that I want to read and I have so much less time to read now than I used to. Now that I've had the book for at least 2 months, I HAVE to finish it. I have read magazines and a few other books in the meantime and am now making myself read this book every day to be done with it. Only 150 more pages to go. I can do it!!

I've done that with Oprah! I read "I Know This Much is True" by Wally Lamb and absolutely hated it! I have read his other book "She's Come Undone" and loved it but I just did not like the story at all in his second book.

I would have liked "I Know This Much Is True" better if it didn't have that stupid monkey story in it as a book within a book. I'm still plugging away at my hated book, but I also started "The Big Rumpus" by Ayun Halliday. Now this book really is funny, my type of humor. I'm enjoying it as much or more than "Operating Instructions".

Yup. Several times.

Your time is too precious, mama. Don't finish it. Apologize. She'll get over it.

Oh yeah...my mom's always giving me pulpy 'women's fiction' books that I can't stand. I finally had to tell her I just don't like that kind of book.

A friend insisted I would love that Ya-Ya book but I couldn't stand it...finally had to tell her when she wanted to go to the movie together (I'd rather go to the dentist!)

So what is the book you're reading? I'm dying of curiosity!

"Lamb" by Christopher Moore. 100 pages to go.

I had a book my boss loaned me for a year!! It took me that long to finish it (this was before kids!) soo embarrassing. I didn't hate it but I kept getting distracted by other funner books.

I also disliked the YaYa book. And The Poisonwood Bible, which was a loaner too - but a quick read at least.

I am in a book club and people don't like certain choices all of the time. In fact, one woman and I go head to head on almost every book...

so, it has given me lots of practice in saying that I have not cared for a book.

My least favorite book of all time-- in fact, the ONLY book that I can honestly say that I detested was " The Shipping News." And everyone else in my book group just loved it... or so they said.

I think I'm the only one in the planet who hated "The Celestine Prophecy". I have to finish a book I've started, so I couldn't stop....it was torture. To this day (I read it about 8 years ago), I have yet to find someone who didn't love it.

I finished the book!!!

Maribel-I never read that book, but I hated the Marianne Williamson book "A Return to Love..." that I read years ago. She used to be one of Oprah's gurus. At the time it got as much publicity as the book you mentioned.

I also started "The Shipping News" and "Poisonwood Bible" but I just couldn't get into either one of those books. They both got great reviews and I love some of Kingsolver's other books.

Whew.... and I thought I was the only one who hated "The Devine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood"! I STILL haven't finished that book. It's sitting in my living room, staring at me... teasing me... I MUST LIKE IT... EVERYBODY LOVES IT... NOBODY HATES IT... WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME?! I feel better that I'm not alone. I think I'll just pawn this book off on somebody else! Ha!

Now... somebody mentioned Celestine Prophesy... I gotta admit, I liked the first one. The second one got a bit goofy. Then, I found out that this individual who wrote the book actually believes all the crap he put in those books (hey, I thought it was just a piece of fiction)... and that just caused me to dispise it for some reason! LOL!

Oh, also the J.D. Sallinger (the author of Catcher in the Rye) books about a family from New York. I think the first book is Franny and Zoe. This is one I couldn't finish. A couple of friends decided to read these for a teeny tiny book club, consisting of just 3 of us. I just didn't get it....I guess I'm not that intellectual . Anyway, I finally fessed up after they had read 3 books and I was still on the first one...I just couldn't continue.

Two from Gallalia - it's a religous romance - NO romance - just two people devoted to God - not a bad concept if you like that sort of thing - but oh what a snoozer!!! My sis-in-law said it 'changed her life' - she was a Jesus freak before reading it though! Not that I'm against that - it just didn't 'move me' except to sleep!

I was in a book club and this woman chose House of the Spirits by Isabelle Allende. She said it was her favorite book EVER . The other 4 of us read it and I was the only one that finished it, we all hated it. Fortunately she was too flakey to set a firm date and when she finally wanted to meet ds had just been born. I don't think she knows that we all hated her favorite book! Oh well... I made the group read Mysteries of Philadelphia by Michael Chabon and we all hated that one too. I read his latedst Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Klay, which was so awesome, but I don't think anyone beleives me!
