Can I make homemade mama cloth with...

... Chinese prefolds and fleece for the backing?

My questions are:

Has anyone done this before? Did it turn out okay?

Can the serger handle sewing through the 6 or 8 layers of cotton from the prefold and the fleece? (Or would I need to buy my mom a new serger after breaking it?)

Any links/ideas where I can find some good microfleece remnants? (I'm thinking Malden Mills windpro or whatever folks use for diaper covers)

I'm exploring the option of making more pads for me and also making some for my little sister for Christmas.

TIA!

Yeah, that'd probably work. You don't need to use windpro though. Just change frequently. Cut up towels topped with preshrunken flannel or jersey work nicely too. Personally, i hate anything that adds bulk.

You may wish to make one sample with the 6 to 8 layers of prefold and fleece and try it. I have found one layer of well-washed prefold works very well, without fleece, and just changed often. I agree with Rebecca, too much bulk is really uncomfortable. I use them with figure skating dresses where I have two pairs of tights, panties, and the dress on, so bulk is a concern of mine.

I make mine with old pre-folds, and a layer of either fleece or felt on the back. My fleece backed ones, I just cut up an old pair of fleece pants. I do them by hand, so no idea about what they would do to a machine.
